That means the lift has to reach a comfortable working height for welding, hammering, and grinding — and it has to stay there through the safety lock cycles without cable creep or hydraulic drift. Every major ALI-certified two-post handles that job well, but the configuration matters more than the brand name on the column.
Clearance is the first working variable. On a restoration project you are often standing under the lift with a plasma cutter or a MIG gun, and the underside of the vehicle has to be at chin height, not chest height. That means the lift has to reach at least 70 inches of column-side clearance under the pinch weld, and 78 inches is more comfortable. Every 2 post car lift on the market can reach that height at the top of the arc, but you need the ceiling to accept it. Single-phase vs three-phase — what your Cedar Rapids panel supports

Phase converters that are undersized destroy hydraulic power units, and the manufacturer warranty will not cover the failure. Match the lift to the panel, not the other way around. Every manufacturer requires a dedicated feeder from the panel to the lift, with no other loads sharing the circuit. That is not a suggestion. A shared circuit means voltage sag when other equipment starts, and voltage sag under load kills power-unit motors. Dedicated means dedicated. One breaker at the panel, one conduit run to the lift, one fused disconnect at the column, one power unit at the end. No welder outlets, no compressor outlets, no lighting shared on that circuit. The disconnect at the column is not optional either — it is the lockout point for service and for safety in an emergency. Wire the lift right the first time and it stays wired right for the life of the equipment.
Amperage, wire size, and disconnect placement
Amperage, wire size, and disconnect placement are the specific decisions your electrician needs to know. A three-phase 208-volt 2 post car lift power unit typically draws about 15 amps per leg at full load. The dedicated circuit needs a 30-amp three-pole breaker, 10-gauge THHN conductor, and a 30-amp three-pole fused disconnect at the column. A single-phase 230-volt unit typically draws 30 amps at full load and needs a 50-amp two-pole breaker with 6-gauge conductor. Those are typical numbers — your specific model’s install manual has the exact requirement and it overrides the typical numbers.
Wire size drives conduit size, and conduit size drives cost. A 10-gauge three-phase run in 3/4-inch EMT is a modest install. A 6-gauge single-phase run in 1-inch EMT is more expensive and harder to bend. For a Cedar Rapids body shop that already has conduit paths run through the ceiling, the incremental cost is small. For a new-build or a retrofit with no existing paths, the electrical install can add a low-four-figure line item. Disconnect placement is at the column, within reach of the operator, with a clear line of sight to the lift status. The manufacturer’s install manual has the exact dimensions and heights. A three-stage front arm with an adjustable extension gets you the reach for a 1965 Mustang with the same lift you use on a modern SUV. Skip the three-stage option and you end up on a milk crate with a floor jack under a vehicle that would not fit on the lift, which defeats the entire purpose of the equipment.
Pad adapters extend the reach vertically. A frame-cradle adapter for classic pickups sits taller than the standard flat pad and reaches the frame rail without touching the running board. A pinch-weld adapter for unibody vehicles gives a positive engagement without slipping.
