Why the Build Dictates the Lift, Not the Other Way Around

Overlanding and off-road rigs are not stock trucks. Long-travel suspension, rock sliders, aftermarket bumpers, and skid plates all change where a lift’s arms and pads need to reach. Before we quote a 2 post hydraulic lift for a build like this, we ask about ride height, arm reach at full extension, and whether the customer needs asymmetric columns to clear a door swung wide for engine work. Freight carriers deliver via semi-trailer, and the shipment is almost always liftgate or dock-only unless the buyer has equipment on site. That’s the detail that trips people up more than any other part of the process.

In this case, the shop had a forklift on-site, which massively simplified everything. We coordinated delivery timing directly with the freight carrier so the truck showed up when someone with forklift experience was actually present, columns came off the trailer safely, and nothing sat on a residential street blocking traffic while someone scrambled for help. Site Prep Before the Truck Even Leaves the Warehouse

We ask about slab thickness and age before we ship anything. A 2 post hydraulic lift anchors into concrete, and undersized or cracked slabs won’t hold anchors under load no matter how good the lift is. For this western Illinois shop, the slab was already rated for commercial use, four inches minimum with rebar, which meant no additional concrete work was needed. We still walked the specific anchor locations against the columns’ baseplate footprint before delivery to make sure there weren’t expansion joints or old anchor holes sitting right where new anchors needed to go.

We also confirmed ceiling height, overhead obstructions like ductwork and lighting, and clear floor space around the columns for arm swing. Unloading and Positioning Without Damaging Anything

Once the forklift had the columns off the trailer, positioning them precisely became the next challenge.
