A two-post lift transfers its entire load path through two small base plates into the slab beneath them. Unlike a four-post lift that spreads weight across a large footprint, a two-post design concentrates enormous side-loading forces on a handful of anchor points, especially as the arms swing out to grab a vehicle. Manufacturers don’t pad these numbers for liability reasons alone; they’ve engineered them from real-world pull-out testing.

Heavier duty lifts, especially those rated 15,000 pounds and up, often call for a thicker pad or additional reinforcement. These aren’t suggestions — they’re the baseline the anchor bolt pull-out ratings are calculated against, and installing on anything less voids the warranty on most brands we carry.

Older Iowa garages are where this trips people up most. A slab poured decades ago for a small passenger car bay may only be 3 inches thick, may have been finished with a lower PSI mix, or may already have hairline cracking from freeze-thaw cycles that are unavoidable in our climate. We always recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual and tap-test inspection before committing to an install location. It’s a lot cheaper to pour a new 4-by-4 pad in the right spot than to anchor into concrete that can’t hold the load and find out during a lift inspection.

Cured Concrete Age Matters More Than People Think

Fresh concrete needs time to reach its rated strength, and installing anchor bolts too early is one of the most common mistakes we see on new construction shop builds. Concrete typically needs a minimum of 28 days to fully cure, though many lift manufacturers require even longer depending on ambient temperature and mix design. Anchoring into concrete that’s only a week or two old means the epoxy or wedge anchors are set into material that hasn’t reached full compressive strength, and that shows up later as loose bolts or spinning anchors.

We’ve had contractors ask if they can “pre-set” anchors during the pour to skip this waiting period. It’s technically possible with certain cast-in-place anchor systems, but it requires precise layout before the concrete goes down, and any error in placement means drilling new holes anyway. For most Iowa shop builds, the simpler path is pouring the pad, letting it cure the full recommended window, and then drilling and setting anchors once the concrete has reached its design strength.

Anchor Bolt Type and Embedment Depth

Most modern two-post lifts use wedge anchors or the equivalent, sized specifically by the manufacturer for that model’s load rating. Embedment depth is just as important as the diameter of the bolt itself. A 3/4-inch anchor might need 4 to 5 inches of embedment into the slab, and forgoing that depth by even half an inch can dramatically reduce holding capacity when the arms are loaded and swung outward.

We always torque anchors to the manufacturer’s exact spec rather than “tight enough by feel.” Over-torquing can crack the surrounding concrete before the lift ever sees a vehicle, while under-torquing leaves play in the base plate that gets worse with cyclical loading. On every install we perform, we also re-check torque after the first few weeks of use, since concrete dust and micro-settling can loosen anchors slightly during that break-in period. It’s a five-minute check that prevents a much bigger problem down the road.

Spacing From Slab Edges and Joints

Anchor bolts need setback distance from any slab edge, expansion joint, or control joint — typically a minimum of several inches depending on anchor diameter. Placing a bolt too close to an edge dramatically reduces the concrete’s ability to resist the pull-out force, because there simply isn’t enough surrounding material to distribute the load. We’ve walked away from installs where the only available floor space put a base plate right on top of a control joint, and rerouting the layout or pouring a dedicated pad was the only responsible option.

Signs Your Existing Concrete May Not Pass

If you’re moving a lift into an existing building rather than new construction, inspect the slab for visible cracking, spalling, or a hollow sound when tapped near the intended footprint. Any of these can indicate the concrete has lost integrity below the surface, even if it looks fine from a distance. We also ask about the building’s history — additions, water damage, or a slab poured in cold weather without proper curing can all leave concrete weaker than its age would suggest.

When in doubt, a core sample sent to a testing lab gives a definitive PSI reading, which is worth the modest cost compared to installing a heavy lift on questionable ground.
