A symmetric lift has four arms of roughly equal reach, and the columns face each other directly. The vehicle sits centered between the posts, meaning about half the wheelbase is in front of the columns and half behind. That balanced geometry is why symmetric setups have been the backbone of truck and fleet work for decades — the load path is clean, the arms are shorter for a given capacity, and shorter arms mean less deflection under a loaded one-ton pickup or a cutaway van.

The trade-off is door clearance. Because the vehicle is centered, the driver’s door lands right at the column on most passenger cars, and technicians end up squeezing in or opening doors partway. In a heavy-duty truck bay that hardly matters; nobody is climbing in and out of a dually all day. In a general repair shop running mostly cars and crossovers, it becomes a daily annoyance.
