Symmetric Lifts: Where They Would Have Made More Sense

We want to be fair to symmetric configurations here, because in a different garage this same customer might have ended up with a symmetric lift instead. If his door had been centered in the bay rather than off to one side, or if his daily work involved longer single jobs like brake or suspension work rather than constant in-and-out fluid service, a symmetric two post lift’s even load path and simpler geometry would have been the better call.

Symmetric lifts also tend to be slightly more forgiving for techs who aren’t consistent about vehicle centering, since both arms are the same length and there’s less to think about when setting pads. The Install Day: What Actually Happened

The asymmetric columns went in with about a foot of usable clearance to the ceiling structure at full rise, which was tighter than either of us would have liked but workable given the alternative options wouldn’t have fit at all.

The door swing test afterward confirmed the whole reason we’d gone asymmetric in the first place. The mechanic could open the service door completely and walk a vehicle in without touching a column, something that wouldn’t have been possible with a symmetric layout in that exact door position. He’s since told us the daily workflow difference has been noticeable, especially during Iowa winters when he’s not fighting bulky coveralls around a tight column gap every trip in and out.
