Why suspension work is harder on 2 post lift cables than a basic oil change

Pulling a strut or a spring means you’re removing a big chunk of a wheel’s weight from the vehicle while the rest of the car stays loaded on the arms. That shifts weight distribution across all four arms unevenly, and the 2 post lift cables that keep those arms synchronized have to compensate constantly as your tech works. On an oil change, the load barely moves. On a suspension job, it moves every few minutes as parts come off and go back on.

That repeated micro-loading is why cables that see heavy suspension and brake work wear faster than cables on a lift used only for basic service. The individual wire strands inside the cable flex under load thousands of extra times a year, and fraying starts on the inside of the cable jacket before it’s ever visible from the outside. If your shop does a lot of shocks, struts, or control arm replacement, we’d plan on inspecting cables more often than the once-a-year schedule that’s fine for a general repair bay.

Arm restraints: the part everyone forgets to check

Arm restraints are the mechanical stops that keep the lift arms from swinging out under load once a vehicle is raised. They’re a separate system from the 2 post lift cables, but they work together — cables handle vertical equalization, restraints handle horizontal arm position. On older lifts we’ve serviced around the Des Moines metro, we regularly find restraint pins worn oval-shaped from years of use, which lets the arm rock side to side even when the cables are perfectly adjusted.

During suspension work specifically, that side-to-side play matters more than usual because you’re applying lateral force to the arm every time you break a lug nut loose or pull on a stuck coil spring. A restraint pin with even an eighth of an inch of extra play, combined with cable slack, can let an arm shift enough to change wheel contact and throw the vehicle off level mid-job. We check restraint pins and bushings any time we’re already under a lift replacing cables — it’s a five-minute look that catches problems before they become a dropped vehicle.

Safety-cam engagement: the last line of defense

The safety cams — sometimes called latches or dogs, depending on the brand — are the mechanical locks that hold the carriage at height even if hydraulic pressure or cable tension is lost. On most two-post lifts, cams engage at fixed intervals as the lift rises, typically every couple of inches, and you’ll hear a distinct click each time one engages.

Here’s the connection to 2 post lift cables that a lot of techs miss: if the cables are unevenly tensioned, one side of the carriage can reach a cam notch slightly before the other, so the cams don’t fully seat on both sides at the same height. That’s a recipe for the load resting on one cam and one cable set instead of being shared evenly. We test this on every service call by raising the lift a few clicks, releasing the hydraulic pressure to let it settle onto the cams, and watching whether both sides settle evenly. If one side hangs up, cable tension is almost always the cause.

Real dimensions: what to measure before you order cables

Ordering 2 post lift cables by guesswork is how shops end up with a cable that’s close but not quite right — too long and it won’t take up slack properly, too short and it binds before the lift reaches full height. We ask for three measurements every time: overall cable length end to end, the swage fitting type on each end (ball stud, threaded stud, or button), and cable diameter, usually 5/16 inch or 3/8 inch depending on lift capacity.

Model number matters just as much as measurements. A Rotary SPOA9 and a Rotary SPOA10 look nearly identical in the bay but use different cable lengths because of frame height differences between capacity tiers. We’ve caught this mismatch on phone orders more than once, which is why we always confirm the exact model tag before shipping. If your lift’s tag is worn or missing, send us photos of the equalizer bracket and pulley setup and we can usually identify the correct cable from there.

How suspension shops in the Des Moines metro keep cables lasting longer

Lubrication schedule is the single biggest factor we see separating shops that replace cables every two years from shops that get five or six years out of a set. Cables that see heavy suspension work need the pulleys and cable-to-pulley contact points greased more often, not just the cables themselves, because dry pulleys create friction points that wear the cable jacket unevenly at specific spots rather than uniformly along the length.

We also recommend rotating your inspection habit to match your workload. A shop doing four suspension jobs a day should be doing a visual cable check weekly, not monthly. Look for flat spots, exposed strands, rust bleeding through the jacket, and any spot where the cable diameter looks thinner than the rest of its length — that’s a sign strands have already broken internally even if the outer jacket looks intact.

What worn cables actually feel like during a suspension job

Techs describe it different ways, but it usually comes down to the lift feeling like it’s fighting itself. One arm drops slightly when you apply downward force pulling a strut. The vehicle rocks when you shift a floor jack under a control arm. The lift makes a clunk when it settles rather than a smooth stop. All of these are symptoms of uneven 2 post lift cables tension, and all of them get worse specifically during suspension and shock work because that’s when the load shifts most dramatically.

We’ve had techs tell us they thought their lift was just old and clunky, only to have new cables installed and suddenly the whole platform feels solid again. It’s rarely the lift’s structure that’s the problem — it’s almost always the cables and the adjustment behind them.

When to call in a professional versus doing it yourself

Cable replacement on a two-post lift isn’t a job we’d hand to someone who’s never done it, mainly because the equalizer system has to be rebalanced correctly afterward or you’re right back to uneven arms. That said, plenty of experienced techs in shops around the Des Moines metro do their own cable swaps with the right instructions and tools — a come-along, the correct socket sizes, and patience.

Where we get called in most is when a shop has already tried a DIY swap and the lift still isn’t equalizing correctly, or when a shop simply doesn’t want the downtime of a bay being out of service while someone learns on the job. Either way works. What matters is that whoever does the job checks arm restraints and safety-cam engagement at the same time, since those systems only work correctly when the cables behind them are properly tensioned.
