The single biggest clearance mistake we see is a shop owner measuring floor-to-ceiling and assuming that’s the usable space. It isn’t. You need to subtract the height of any lights, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and structural beams that hang below the actual ceiling, because a two-post lift raised to full height plus the vehicle sitting on it needs real headroom above the arms and carriage. Most standard-duty two-post lifts need somewhere in the range of 12 to 14 feet of clear overhead space to reach full rise without a vehicle roof brushing a joist or a lift arm clipping a duct run.

Squeeze a lift into a bay that’s too narrow and you’ll find yourself unable to fully open a car door once the vehicle is raised, which defeats half the purpose of having a lift in the first place.

Two two-post lifts installed too close together can create interference between vehicles or make it impossible to drive a second vehicle in while the first is raised. Door Swing and Vehicle Length Clearance
Once a vehicle is up on a two-post lift, its doors need to open fully for technicians to work comfortably, and that swing radius has to be accounted for in your clearance plan. This is especially true for larger trucks and vans with longer doors, where the arc of an opening door can extend well past what a sedan would need. If your bay is tight on width, a lift positioned dead-center might still leave you with a door that can’t open past the neighboring wall or equipment.
