Understanding two post lift electrical requirements before the truck shows up is the difference between a same-day startup and a lift standing in your bay for three weeks waiting on an electrician. We install and service lifts all over Iowa out of our shop in Ames, and the single most common delay we run into isn’t the concrete, the ceiling height, or the freight — it’s power. Somebody ordered a 220V single-phase column, then discovered the nearest available circuit is a 15-amp 120V outlet shared with the compressor. This guide walks through what the power supply actually needs to look like, what your electrician needs to hear from you, and how to avoid the mistakes we clean up most often.

Start With the Power You Already Have, Not the Lift You Want

Almost every two post lift on the market is available with a power unit configured for 208-230V single phase, 208-230V three phase, or 460V three phase. A handful of light-duty home units run on 120V, but they’re the exception and they’re slow. So the first question we ask on every quote call isn’t “how heavy are your trucks” — it’s “what’s in your panel?” Walk out to the service panel, open the door, and tell us the main breaker rating, whether you have two hot legs or three, and how much spare capacity is left after the compressor, the welder, and the lights.

That one phone call reorders the whole project. A rural shop outside Nevada, Iowa called us last spring convinced they needed a three-phase lift because “commercial equipment is three phase.” They had 200A single-phase residential-style service. We shipped the same 10,000 lb clearfloor column with a 230V single-phase motor instead, and it went up in a day with no service upgrade. Going the other direction — ordering single phase into a building with three-phase service — isn’t wrong, but you give up efficiency and you’ll draw more amps than you need to. The two post lift electrical requirements are flexible at order time and expensive to change after the power unit ships, so settle the voltage question first.

Voltage and Phase: What Each Option Actually Means for You

Single-phase 208-230V is what most independent shops and virtually every home garage end up with. A typical 10,000 lb two post pulls somewhere in the range of 20-25 running amps on single phase at 230V, with a brief inrush spike on startup. It lifts fine, it’s simple, and replacement motors are everywhere. The tradeoff is amperage: you’re pushing the same work through two legs instead of three, so wire and breaker sizing go up.

Three-phase 208-230V cuts running amperage roughly in half for the same horsepower, usually landing in the low teens. If your building already has three-phase service — common in older Iowa industrial parks, grain-belt shops, and any building that once housed machine tools — order three phase. The motor runs cooler, starts smoother, and lasts longer. 460V three phase drops amperage further still and is the right call in larger fleet and municipal shops where the panel is already 480V. What you cannot do is buy a three-phase power unit and run it on single-phase service, or vice versa, without swapping the motor. Motors are field-replaceable and we stock them, but it’s a needless expense. When people ask us about two post lift electrical requirements mid-install, this mismatch is usually what happened.

Breaker Sizing, Wire Gauge, and Run Length

Follow the manufacturer’s data plate first, then your electrician’s read of the code. As a working baseline, a 230V single-phase two post lift is typically fed by a 30-amp dedicated circuit. Three-phase 230V units often land on a 20-amp circuit, and 460V three phase can drop to 15 amps. Those are starting points, not gospel — a 15,000 lb lift with a bigger power unit moves the numbers, and the National Electrical Code sizing for motor loads is not the same math as a receptacle circuit.

Wire gauge is where the long runs bite people. Ten-gauge copper is common for a 30-amp single-phase feed, but if the panel sits 90 feet away across the shop, voltage drop over that distance can starve the motor. A starved motor draws more current, runs hot, trips thermal overloads, and eventually cooks. We’ve been called out to “bad power units” three separate times in the last couple of years that turned out to be undersized feeders on long runs. Have your electrician calculate voltage drop for the actual measured run, not a guess, and step up a gauge if it’s over about 3 percent. Also insist on a dedicated circuit. Sharing with a compressor guarantees nuisance trips right when a car is at full height. Getting this part of the two post lift electrical requirements right up front costs a little more copper and saves a service call.

Disconnects, Whips, and Where the Power Lands on the Column

The power unit mounts on one column — the one your layout calls the power side — and that’s where the feed needs to terminate. On most two post lifts, the motor and control box are factory-wired to each other, so the electrician’s job is bringing an appropriately sized feeder to a disconnect or receptacle within sight of the operator’s position.

We strongly prefer a lockable fused disconnect or a clearly labeled breaker within a few feet of the column over a cord-and-plug arrangement. It makes lockout/tagout real when someone is servicing hydraulics or replacing cables, and inspectors like it. If your shop does go the receptacle route, a NEMA 6-50 or similar 250V configuration is typical, and the plug must match what came in the box. Do not cut the factory plug off and hardwire it without checking whether that voids the warranty on the electrical components. One more detail people forget: the overhead limit switch on an overhead-style two post runs low-voltage wiring across the top beam and down the off side. That’s low voltage, not line voltage, but it still has to be routed and secured so it doesn’t get pinched by the carriage. Grounding, Bonding, and the Details Inspectors Look For

A lift is a grounded piece of machinery with a motor, a contactor, and a person standing under a two-ton vehicle. Grounding is not optional and it’s not a formality. Every install needs an equipment grounding conductor run with the circuit conductors back to the panel — not a ground rod driven next to the column, which we have genuinely seen someone try.

Beyond the ground, the items that come up in inspections are conduit support, box fill, proper connectors where conduit enters the control box, and labeling at the panel. If your building has a concrete floor and you’re running conduit along the wall to the column, keep it up out of the wheel path and out of the mop water. Surface-mount EMT with the right straps looks tidy and passes; flexible cord stapled to a stud does not. In an unheated Iowa pole barn, be aware that condensation collects in conduit runs that dip below the box, so pitch your runs so water can’t pool at the control box. None of this is exotic, but it’s the part of the two post lift electrical requirements that a general handyman tends to shortcut and a licensed electrician does automatically. Home Garage Installs: 120V Realities and Panel Capacity

Home installs are where we spend the most time managing expectations. A detached garage on a 60-amp subpanel with the door opener, a fridge, and a compressor already on it usually has room for a 230V lift circuit — but only if the subpanel feeder itself can carry it. We’ve had homeowners run a beautiful new 30-amp circuit off a subpanel that’s fed by 8-gauge aluminum from 1978, which just moves the bottleneck.

If you’re planning a BendPak or Atlas two post for a home shop, budget for an electrician to evaluate the whole path from the meter forward. A subpanel upgrade or a new feeder to the garage is a common line item and it’s better to know in advance. On the 120V question: yes, a few small-capacity lifts will run on 120V, but they’re slow, they’re hard on the motor, and they still want a dedicated 20-amp circuit — not the outlet the freezer is on. For most home garages, we recommend biting the bullet on 230V single phase. Rise time is faster, the motor lives longer, and you have headroom if you ever move up in capacity. Getting It Right the First Time — Call Us Before You Call the Electrician

Here’s the sequence that works. Call us with your building details and available power. We spec the lift and the power unit voltage to match. We send you the manufacturer’s electrical page with the actual amperage draw and recommended circuit for that specific model. You hand that single sheet to your electrician, who runs the circuit and sets the disconnect before our install date. We show up, anchor the columns, plumb the hydraulics, wire the limit switch, bleed the system, and cycle-test it. That’s a clean install.

Where it goes wrong is when the lift arrives before anyone has looked at the panel. Then the columns sit boxed up, we reschedule, and you’re paying an electrician for an emergency slot. We’d rather spend fifteen minutes on the phone with you in the planning stage.
