Step One: Measure Before You Fall in Love With a Lift

Step Three: Map Your Electrical and Air Lines Early

Two-post lifts need a dedicated circuit, typically 220V single-phase for most home-garage-sized units, and that circuit needs to exist before delivery day, not after. We see garages where the panel is on the opposite wall from where the lift needs to sit, which means running conduit through or around a bay that’s about to be full of equipment. Sequencing this before the lift arrives, rather than after, saves an entire extra service call. The same goes for air lines if the lift or accessories are air-assisted — plan the compressor location and drop points around the lift’s final footprint, not the other way around.

Step Four: Plan the Door Swing and Approach Path

Getting the lift itself through the garage door is only half the challenge — getting vehicles in and out once it’s installed is the other half. We ask about garage door height and width separately from ceiling height, because a tall ceiling doesn’t help if the door itself is too short for a lifted truck to clear, or too narrow for comfortable turning once a car’s on the ramp. Family shops doing inspection work in particular need a smooth in-and-out flow since they’re cycling vehicles all day, not just parking one project car for a weekend.

Step Five: Confirm Overhead Clearance for the Full Lift Cycle

Ceiling height numbers get thrown around loosely, but what actually matters is clearance at full lift height with the vehicle’s tallest point included, plus the header bar or overhead structure of the lift itself. An 11 or 12 foot ceiling sounds generous until you subtract the lift’s own height and a raised pickup.
