Why Freight Logistics Matter More Than the Lift Itself

A typical 2 post lift home garage order ships as two or three crates: the columns, the carriage assemblies, and a smaller box with cables, arms, and hardware. Combined weight usually runs 1,000 to 1,500 pounds depending on capacity — a 9,000 lb lift weighs noticeably less than a 12,000 lb commercial-grade unit. Freight carriers deliver on a semi with a liftgate in most cases, but not always, and that’s the detail that trips people up. If you order without confirming liftgate service, the driver can legally leave the crates on the trailer and drive off.

We’ve had family shops assume the freight company would bring a forklift. They don’t. A liftgate lowers the pallet to the ground; from there you need a pallet jack, an engine hoist, or several strong people with pry bars and pipe rollers to get columns to their final position. For a garage handling tire rotation and wheel work, the columns typically only need to move 10-20 feet from the driveway to the bay, but on gravel or grass that distance gets hard fast. We tell every customer: measure your driveway width, confirm your delivery has a liftgate, and have a plan for the last 20 feet before the truck arrives.

Real Ceiling Height and Bay Width Numbers

Most 2 post lift home garage installs we quote need at least 11 to 12 feet of ceiling height for a standard-rise lift with the vehicle raised to full travel — more like 13-14 feet if you want clearance for a raised truck or want to work standing underneath comfortably. Bay width matters just as much. A single stall in an oversized three-stall garage often measures 12 to 14 feet wide, which is plenty for the lift itself (most 2-post footprints run 10-12 feet outside column to outside column) but tight if you’re also parking a second vehicle or storing a tool chest beside it.

For tire rotation and wheel work specifically, you don’t need the tallest lift on the market — a mid-rise or standard 2-post at 9,000-10,000 lb capacity handles nearly every passenger vehicle and light truck. What matters more is column spacing relative to your vehicle’s wheelbase and door swing. We always ask for actual bay dimensions, not estimates, before recommending a model.

Baseplate vs. Overhead: What Your Ceiling Decides

Freight and space planning eventually run into the baseplate-versus-overhead question. An overhead (asymmetric) 2-post lift needs enough ceiling clearance above the crossbar for the tallest vehicle you’ll lift, plus a few inches of margin. If your garage has ductwork, a garage door opener rail, or a lower truss line, a baseplate model — where the hydraulic cylinder sits at floor level between the columns instead of overhead — is often the better fit. It changes nothing about the freight side, but it does change what you’re bolting to the slab.

Either way, we recommend having your ceiling height and any overhead obstructions measured before the freight even ships, because a lift ordered for the wrong configuration means a return shipment — and returning 1,200 pounds of steel is neither cheap nor fast.

Concrete Thickness and Anchoring After Unload

Once the crates are staged in the bay, the next real logistics question is the slab. Most 2-post lifts want 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete, and older home garage slabs sometimes fall short of that, especially in additions built decades apart from the original structure. We’ve walked family shops through core-drilling test holes to confirm thickness before anchoring, because putting a lift anchor into 3-inch concrete on soft base is asking for a lift that walks or cracks the pad over time.

This is also where local codes and rebar mesh come into play — some slabs have wire mesh a couple inches down that will deflect an anchor bit. We always tell customers doing a 2 post lift home garage install to have a drill and a masonry bit ready to test-drill in the exact anchor spots before the install crew shows up, or to let us handle that step during a professional install.

Staging the Columns for a One-Person or Small Crew Install

Without a forklift on site, most family-run shops end up staging columns using an engine hoist, furniture dollies, or simply sliding crates on cardboard and lumber across a swept floor. It’s slower than a forklift but entirely doable for a 2-post setup, since the columns aren’t so tall that tipping is a major risk during a short move. The heavier concern is the carriage assemblies and the equalizer cable — these need to stay flat and undamaged during handling, since a kinked cable is a safety issue before the lift ever lifts a car.

We generally recommend a 2-3 person crew minimum for unloading and staging, even with mechanical assistance, and having the anchor locations chalk-marked on the floor before columns arrive so you’re not making layout decisions while holding 400 pounds of steel column.

Why Tire and Wheel Shops Choose the 2-Post Over Other Configurations

For a shop built around tire rotation and wheel work, a 2 post lift home garage setup makes more sense than a scissor lift or a 4-post in almost every case. Scissor and mid-rise lifts cost more for a use case that doesn’t need it — full underbody access for tire and brake work doesn’t require the deck-style platform a scissor provides, and a 4-post is built more for storage and alignment than for quick, repeated tire changes. The open-access design of a 2-post lift lets a tech spin a wheel freely with nothing blocking the tire’s swing path, which matters when you’re doing wheel work all day.

Family shops that have run one for a generation or more tend to stick with the configuration because it’s simple, it’s fast to cycle vehicles through, and it holds up to decades of daily use with basic annual maintenance — cable tension checks, arm pin lubrication, and hydraulic fluid checks.

Planning Your Own Install: What to Confirm Before You Order

Before ordering a 2 post lift home garage unit, confirm four things: your ceiling height with any overhead obstructions noted, your bay width and depth, your slab thickness, and whether your freight delivery includes a liftgate. Those four answers determine almost everything else — model selection, baseplate versus overhead configuration, and whether you need professional installation or can reasonably stage and anchor it yourself with a small crew.
