We recently talked through a project with a tire and alignment shop owner in Waukee who wanted a second unit for seasonal storage lifts at his house, not his shop, and his first question wasn’t about arm reach or lifting capacity. It was whether his garage panel could even handle it. That’s the right question, and it’s the one most homeowners skip until the installer shows up and finds out the answer is no.

Why electrical planning matters more than people think

Every 2 post lift home garage project we quote starts with the same conversation: what’s your voltage, what’s your amperage, and is there a dedicated circuit anywhere near the install location. Most residential lifts run on 220-volt single phase power, pulling somewhere in the 20 to 30 amp range depending on motor size. A lot of Iowa garages were built with a single 100 or 150 amp panel feeding the whole house, and by the time you count the furnace, water heater, and a few outlets, there isn’t much headroom left for a lift motor that draws hard on startup.

We’ve seen homeowners assume any 220V outlet will work because it looks the same as their dryer plug. It usually won’t, because dryer circuits are sized for a different draw pattern and often aren’t dedicated. A 2 post lift home garage setup needs its own breaker, sized to the manufacturer’s spec, run in wire gauge that matches the amperage — not undersized to save a few feet of copper. Undersized wire heats up, trips breakers under load, and in the worst cases becomes a fire risk. This is not a spot to guess.

Single phase versus three phase — what home garages actually get

Nearly every home-installed 2 post lift home garage unit we sell runs single phase, because that’s what residential services provide. Three phase power exists almost exclusively in commercial buildings with the infrastructure to support it, and converting a home garage to three phase is expensive enough that it rarely makes sense for a hobbyist or even a shop owner storing a personal vehicle. If you’ve got a detached shop building with its own service, that changes the math, but for a typical attached garage, plan on single phase from the start.

The tire and alignment shop owner we mentioned already understood this from running commercial equipment daily, but he hadn’t accounted for the difference between his shop’s electrical service and his house’s older panel. That’s common. People who work around lifts all day still don’t always translate that experience to their own garage, because home wiring and shop wiring get installed to different codes and different eras. We walk every home customer through this before a lift ever ships, because a wrong assumption here costs real money to fix after the fact.

Sizing the breaker and running the wire correctly

Once we know the lift model, we know the motor’s rated amp draw, and from there sizing the breaker and wire gauge is straightforward — but it still has to be done by someone qualified, not eyeballed. Most 2 post lift home garage motors fall in a fairly predictable range, and manufacturers publish exact requirements in the install manual. We always tell customers to pull that spec sheet before an electrician shows up, because guessing at amperage leads to callbacks.

Wire run length matters too. If the panel is on the far side of the garage from the lift location, voltage drop over a long run can undersize an otherwise correctly rated circuit. A licensed electrician accounts for this, but a lot of DIY installs don’t, and the lift ends up underpowered or tripping under load. We’d rather see a customer spend a little more upfront on proper wire gauge than fight nuisance trips for years. It’s a one-time cost that protects the whole investment.

GFCI, disconnects, and code requirements that get overlooked

Local code in most Iowa municipalities requires a disconnect switch near equipment like this, sometimes GFCI protection depending on the circuit type and inspector interpretation. This is one of the more commonly missed details on a 2 post lift home garage install, because it’s not always obvious from the lift’s own installation manual — it’s a building code requirement layered on top. We tell every customer to check with their local building department before final inspection, especially if a permit was pulled for the concrete or the electrical work.

Skipping this step doesn’t just risk a failed inspection. It can also affect insurance if something goes wrong later and the installation wasn’t up to code. We’ve had customers assume that because the lift manufacturer didn’t mention a disconnect switch, they didn’t need one — but manufacturer specs and local electrical code are two different sets of requirements, and both apply. Getting an electrician who’s done lift installs before, or at least understands 220V equipment circuits, saves a lot of back-and-forth.

What we saw in the Waukee electrical assessment

When we walked through the Waukee project, the panel had capacity but the existing circuits nearby weren’t dedicated, so we routed a new home run straight back to the panel rather than trying to tap an existing line. That’s usually the cleaner fix even when it means more wire and more labor, because shared circuits with a 2 post lift home garage motor on them tend to cause problems down the road — nuisance trips when the furnace kicks on, voltage sag that shortens motor life.

This owner also planned to use the lift for seasonal storage, parking a vehicle up in the air for months at a time rather than running it daily. That use case doesn’t change the electrical requirements, but it did change how we talked about maintenance — a lift that only cycles a few times a year still needs its safeties checked before every use, because sitting idle doesn’t preserve mechanical condition the way people assume.

Concrete and mounting considerations that pair with electrical work

Electrical isn’t the only infrastructure question. Most 2 post lift home garage installs need at least 4 inches of concrete, and a lot of manufacturers spec closer to 4.5 or 5 inches for full rated capacity, especially on baseplate models where the anchors carry more of the load. We always ask about slab thickness and age in the same breath as we ask about the panel, because both determine whether a garage is ready or needs prep work first.

Timing the electrical rough-in with the concrete work, if you’re pouring new slab, saves a lot of headache. Conduit run before the pour beats surface-mounted conduit after the fact, both for looks and for protecting the wire from damage. If you’re retrofitting into an existing slab and existing panel, just budget the electrician’s time into your overall project cost from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought once the lift is already sitting in the driveway.

Getting the electrical right before the lift ships

Our approach with every home garage customer, whether it’s a first-time buyer or someone like the Waukee shop owner who already knows the equipment side cold, is to nail down electrical requirements before the lift leaves the warehouse. It’s a lot cheaper to fix a spec mismatch on paper than after a lift is bolted to the floor and an electrician shows up to find the panel can’t support it.
