A good two post lift maintenance checklist is the cheapest insurance a shop can buy, and we say that as the crew who gets called after the fact. We install and service lifts out of Ames, Iowa, and most of the failures we drive to were preventable — a frayed equalizer cable nobody looked at, a lock latch packed with brake dust, a carriage slider worn paper-thin because the columns never saw grease. Very little of that requires a technician. It requires ten minutes a week and somebody who knows what to look at. Below is the same two post lift maintenance checklist we hand to shop owners across central Iowa, broken into daily, monthly, and annual work, with notes on what actually fails on Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak columns.

Start With the Daily Walk-Around — It Takes Ninety Seconds
Every shift, before the first vehicle goes up, somebody should look at the lift instead of just using it. Walk the columns and check that the floor anchors are tight and that the concrete around them has not spalled or cracked in a ring. Look at the arm restraint pins — do they drop and engage, or are they hanging loose because the spring is broken? Raise the empty carriages a foot, then lower them onto the locks and listen. You want crisp, even clicks from both columns. If one side ratchets and the other is silent, stop using it until you know why.
Then look at the hydraulic power unit and the floor under it. A dime-sized puddle under the cylinder base is a seal telling you what is coming next. Check the reservoir sight or dipstick, check that the hose fitting at the cylinder is dry, and glance at the overhead beam on a clearfloor unit for a cable that has jumped its sheave. We had a two-bay shop near Boone lose a full week of production because a hose rubbed a column edge for months and finally split at nine in the morning with a loaded truck overhead. Monthly: Cables, Sheaves, and the Equalizer System
Cables are the single most common part we ship, and they almost never fail without warning. Once a month, wipe a shop rag along the length of each equalizer cable. If the rag snags, you have a broken wire strand — a meat hook — and the cable is on borrowed time. Look at the swaged ends where the cable meets the anchor stud, check for kinks near the sheave, and confirm the sheaves still spin freely instead of grinding in place. A frozen sheave saws through a cable faster than any amount of load cycling.
While you are in there, verify cable tension is even. On most two post designs the cables only synchronize the locks, not the load, but uneven tension means one side locks before the other and the carriages drift out of level over time. Adjust at the nuts on the equalizer studs, a little at each end, and recheck the locks. Replace cables in pairs, never one at a time, and replace them on schedule rather than on failure — most manufacturers call for inspection at least monthly and replacement based on condition, not mileage. Lubrication Points People Always Miss
Nine out of ten “my lift is jerky going up” calls come down to dry columns. The inside faces of the column where the carriage slide blocks ride need grease — a light coat of white lithium or the manufacturer-specified lube, applied with the carriage run all the way up and then all the way down so it distributes. Skip this and the UHMW slide blocks wear unevenly, the carriage cocks in the column, and the lift starts binding and chattering. Slide blocks are inexpensive; a scored column is not.
Beyond the columns, hit the arm pivot pins, the arm restraint gear teeth on models that use them, the lock latch pivots, the sheave pins, and the overhead cable rollers on clearfloor lifts. Use a light oil on the lock latch mechanism, not heavy grease — grease collects brake dust and turns into a paste that holds the latch open, which is one of the most dangerous conditions we find in the field. Extension pads and screw-up adapters need attention too; the threads on a screw pad seize solid if they are never cleaned and oiled, and a tech fighting a stuck pad ends up short-cutting the setup. Hydraulics: Fluid, Bleeding, and Seals
Check fluid level with the lift fully lowered, every time — checking it raised gives you a false low reading and people overfill. Most units run AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil or an approved ATF equivalent; use what the power unit tag specifies. Plan on a fluid change and filter service somewhere in the two-to-five-year window depending on duty cycle, sooner if the oil looks milky, which means water intrusion, or dark and burnt, which means the pump has been running hot.
If the lift creeps down under load, do not assume the cylinder is bad. Nine times out of ten it is the check valve or the lowering valve seat holding a piece of debris, and a flush plus a cycle of the valve clears it. If the lift is slow to rise or the carriages surge, bleed the system by running it to full height and holding for a few seconds, then lowering completely, three or four cycles. Air is the usual culprit on a newly installed or recently serviced unit. Genuine cylinder seal failure shows up as fluid on the outside of the ram, and at that point you are choosing between a seal kit and a replacement cylinder. Locks, Safeties, and the Test Nobody Runs
The mechanical locks are the reason a two post lift is safe, and they are the part most shops never test deliberately. Once a month, raise the unloaded carriages, set them on a lock position, and then hit the lowering handle briefly — the lift should hold on the latch, not drift. Do that at low, mid, and high positions. Both columns must engage on the same notch; if they do not, your cable synchronization needs adjustment before anything heavy goes overhead.
Check the arm restraints separately. Swing each arm out and back and confirm the restraint locks positively at each position. Broken restraint gears are common on older lifts where techs have kicked arms into place for a decade. Inspect the overhead shutoff bar on clearfloor models — it should cut power before a roof rack finds the beam. And look at the safety decals and load capacity labels; faded, unreadable decals will get flagged in any insurance walkthrough or ALI-style inspection, and replacements are cheap. Anchors, Concrete, and the Annual Inspection
Anchor bolts loosen. Concrete cures, flexes, and in Iowa it also freezes. Once a year, torque every anchor to spec with a torque wrench — not a rattle gun, not “until it feels tight.” Most two post installations call for anchors in the 90 to 150 ft-lb range depending on the bolt and the manufacturer, so check the manual. If an anchor spins without building torque, the hole is compromised and needs an oversized anchor or an epoxy set, and if the concrete has cracked from anchor to anchor you may be looking at a footing pour. We have re-anchored plenty of lifts in older shops where the original slab was four inches over questionable base.
The annual pass is also when we recommend bringing in an outside set of eyes. An ALI Certified Lift Inspector, or at minimum a qualified service tech, catches things an in-house checklist misses — column plumb, carriage wear tolerance, cylinder mount condition, structural weld inspection. Many insurance carriers and OSHA-conscious fleet operations now expect documented annual inspections, and having the paperwork matters if something ever goes wrong. Documenting It So It Actually Happens
The best two post lift maintenance checklist in the world does nothing laminated in a drawer. What works in the shops we serve: one sheet per lift, mounted on the column itself, with initials-and-date boxes for daily, monthly, and annual items. Assign it to one person — usually the lead tech or the shop foreman — and make it part of open or close, not a separate task somebody has to remember. When we visit a shop with initialed sheets on the columns, the lifts almost always look right. When there is no sheet, we usually find a dry column and a cable with broken strands.
Record part replacements too. Knowing you put cables on in a given spring tells you something three years later; guessing tells you nothing. Note the fluid type you used so the next person does not mix oils.
