Why a Written Schedule Beats “We Look At It Sometimes”
ANSI/ALI ALOI, the operation and maintenance standard that every major lift manufacturer references in its manual, doesn’t just recommend periodic inspection — it assumes a documented one. If OSHA walks into your shop after an incident, “we look at it sometimes” is not a defense. A dated log with initials next to each task is. That’s the practical reason to build a two post lift maintenance schedule: it converts good intentions into evidence, and it tells the next tech what was already done so nothing falls through the cracks between shifts.
The other reason is money. We’ve replaced enough cables to know that a $30 can of chain and cable lube applied four times a year would have saved a customer a four-figure repair plus two days of downtime. Cables don’t fail all at once. They dry out, they fray a strand at a time inside the sheave groove where nobody looks, and then one morning a lock doesn’t release and the whole assembly gets condemned. Same with arm restraints — the gear teeth wear, the pin stops seating, and the lift technically still works right up until an arm swings under load. Documentation catches the slow failures early. Daily: The Thirty-Second Walkaround
Every shift, before the first vehicle goes up, somebody should put eyes on the lift. This isn’t a formal inspection — it’s the same instinct that makes you glance at your tire pressure before a long drive. Look at the columns for hydraulic weep. Look under the power unit for a puddle. Look at the cables where they enter the sheaves at the top of each column and confirm nothing is hanging loose or birdcaged.
Then use your ears. Raise the empty lift a foot and listen for the safety latches clicking in sequence on both columns. If one side clicks and the other doesn’t, stop and call us. Lower it and confirm both arm restraints engage with a positive detent — grab an arm and try to swing it. If it moves freely under load, that lift is out of service until it’s fixed. Finally, look down at the floor: chips of concrete around the anchor bolts, rust bleeding out from under a base plate, or a shim stack that’s shifted are all signs the anchoring needs attention before anything else on your two post lift maintenance schedule matters. Weekly: Latches, Restraints, and Lock Release Cables

Cycle the lift through its full travel two or three times with no load. Each safety latch should drop into every step of the ladder cleanly and release cleanly when you pull the handle. Sticky latches almost always trace back to a stretched or kinked lock release cable, a dry pivot pin, or dust and salt packed into the latch housing — which in Iowa means February is your worst month.
Hit the latch pivots and the arm restraint gear teeth with a light penetrating oil, not grease. Grease collects the brake dust and grit that turns into grinding paste. While you’re in there, check the equalizer cable tension. On most two-post designs the carriages should sit level within about a quarter inch of each other; if one side leads the other, the cables need adjusting before uneven loading starts chewing on slide blocks. Monthly: Hydraulics, Fasteners, and Slide Blocks
Monthly is when you get into the guts. Check the hydraulic fluid level in the power unit reservoir with the lift fully lowered — that’s the only position where the reading means anything. Most units want AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil or Dexron ATF; check your specific manual, because running the wrong viscosity in an Iowa shop that drops below freezing overnight causes slow, groaning lifts every winter morning. Look at the hose from the power unit to the cylinder, and at the crossover line, for swelling, chafing, or seepage at the fittings.
Then go around every fastener with a torque wrench. Anchor bolts on most 10,000 lb two-post lifts spec somewhere in the 85 to 110 ft-lb range depending on brand and anchor type — check the manual, don’t guess, and don’t just lean on them with a breaker bar. Inspect the nylon slide blocks or rollers in each carriage for wear; if the carriage rocks in the column, blocks are due. Grease the sheave bearings if your model has fittings, and wipe the column interiors where you can reach. Quarterly: Cables, Sheaves, and a Real Load Test
Four times a year, the cables get a proper inspection instead of a glance. Run the lift to full height, then go column by column with a flashlight and a rag. You’re looking for broken strands, flat spots where a cable has been riding a worn sheave, corrosion, and any kinking near the end fittings. ALI guidance calls for replacement at a specific number of broken wires per lay, but our field rule is simpler: if you find one broken strand, plan on replacing cables in pairs, because they’ve lived the same life.
Lube the full cable run and both sheaves with a proper wire rope lubricant that penetrates rather than just coating. Then load-test it. Put a mid-weight vehicle on the arms, raise it to a working height, set the latches, and leave it for fifteen minutes. Come back and check for drift. A cylinder or power unit that bleeds down under load is telling you the seals are going, and that’s a repair to schedule on your terms rather than at 4:30 on a Friday. Annually: The ALI Certified Inspection
Once a year, somebody who isn’t you needs to look at the lift.
