Two post lift maintenance is the cheapest insurance a shop will ever buy, and it’s the thing we see skipped more than anything else. The pattern almost never changes. The lift that drops a vehicle, seizes a carriage, or fails an inspection is virtually never a lift that got a bad part — it’s a lift nobody looked at for six or seven years. Nobody greased the slide blocks. Nobody checked cable tension. Nobody pulled a flashlight and looked at the anchor bolts. This guide is what we’d tell you standing in your bay.

Why Neglect Shows Up Long Before Failure
A two post lift almost always warns you before it hurts anybody. The problem is that the warnings are quiet. A carriage that shudders on the way up is telling you the slide blocks are worn and the carriage is now riding metal-on-metal inside the column. A lift that won’t hold a set height overnight is telling you the cylinder seals are passing fluid. A lock that clicks unevenly side to side is telling you cable tension has drifted and one carriage is sitting higher than the other. None of those symptoms stop a shop from turning wrenches on Tuesday, so they get ignored until something expensive happens.
That’s the whole argument for scheduled two post lift maintenance instead of reactive repair. We had a general repair shop in central Iowa call us because their overhead lift “felt weird.” One equalizer cable had frayed down to a handful of strands where it wrapped the top sheave — the sheave bearing had seized years earlier and the cable had been sawing itself apart every cycle since. That’s a two-hundred-dollar-ish sheave that turned into a full cable set, a day of downtime, and a very uncomfortable conversation about what would have happened at 5,000 pounds. Thirty seconds a month with a flashlight would have caught it. That’s genuinely all it takes on most of these lifts, and it’s why we push a written routine rather than a mental one.
The Daily Walk-Around Nobody Wants To Do
Daily checks feel like busywork right up until they aren’t. Before the first vehicle goes up, somebody should look at four things: the arm restraints, the lock engagement, the hydraulic hose and fittings, and the floor around the base plates. Arm restraints are the single most abused component on a two post lift. The pins wear, the gear teeth round off, and shop guys learn to “help” them with a foot. If a restraint doesn’t positively engage and hold, the lift is out of service. There’s no gray area there — that restraint is what keeps an arm from swinging out from under a rocker panel while somebody is under the car.
Lock engagement is the second one. Raise the lift empty, then lower it onto the locks and listen. You want clean, matched clicks on both columns. If one side is a beat behind, cable tension needs adjusting before anything heavy goes up. Then look under the power unit and along the hose for weeping fluid — a hydraulic line that’s damp is a hydraulic line that’s failing. Finally, check the concrete around the anchors for hairline cracks or spalling and make sure nobody’s parked a toolbox against a column. It’s a ninety-second lap. We keep a laminated card on the wall at customer shops because a routine that lives in one person’s head disappears the day that person takes a vacation.
Monthly Two Post Lift Maintenance That Matters Most
Monthly is where the real work happens. Cable inspection comes first: run a rag along each cable and feel for broken strands, then look closely where cables cross sheaves at the top of the columns and under the base. Any broken wire means plan a cable replacement, and cables get replaced as a set, never individually. While you’re up there, check that the sheaves actually spin freely — a frozen sheave destroys cable faster than anything else on the lift.
Next, lubrication. Slide blocks or roller assemblies need grease, the lock dogs and their pivots need a shot of oil, and the arm pivot points want grease where fittings exist. Overhead models need the crossbar sheaves and equalizer cable at the top serviced too, which means getting on a ladder — and yes, that’s exactly why it gets skipped. Then check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, not raised, or you’ll overfill it. Wipe the columns, clear debris out of the base channels, and confirm the safety overhead shutoff bar on an overhead lift still trips. Anchors, Concrete, and the Thing Inspectors Catch
Anchor bolts are the item we retorque most often on service calls, and it’s the item shops think about least. Wedge anchors relax over time — thermal cycling, vibration from the lift settling under load, and normal concrete creep all reduce clamping force. Manufacturer specs vary, but most two post lifts want anchors retorqued to somewhere in the 90 to 110 ft-lb range, and you check that with a torque wrench, not by leaning on a breaker bar until it feels tight.
Concrete condition is the other half of this. We need to see solid, uncracked slab around each base plate. Radial cracks running away from an anchor mean the concrete is failing and the lift needs to come out for a proper pad. Iowa shops with older buildings run into this constantly — a lot of 1970s slabs are four inches on questionable base, and most two post lifts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with more depth for higher-capacity models. If you’re finding shims stacked under a base plate to level a column, that’s not a maintenance item, that’s a call to us. We’d rather cut and pour a proper pad than certify a lift we don’t trust. Missing or short anchors, spalled concrete, and undocumented shims are also the three findings that get written up fastest during an annual ALI inspection.
Hydraulics: Fluid, Seals, and Slow Drift
The hydraulic system on a two post lift is simple, which is why it’s forgiving of neglect right up until it isn’t. Fluid gets contaminated with water and fine debris over years, and contaminated fluid chews cylinder seals and pump internals. We recommend changing fluid every two to three years in a working shop, more often in a dusty environment. Use what the manufacturer calls for — most take AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, and some older units spec ATF. Don’t mix them.
The symptom to watch for is drift. Park a loaded lift at height off the locks for ten minutes; if it settles noticeably, you have internal cylinder bypass or an external leak. Small drops usually mean seals, and a reseal kit is a reasonable repair on most cylinders. If a cylinder is scored or the barrel is pitted, replacement is the better money. Also check that the power unit isn’t cycling hot or noisy — a motor that screams and a lift that lifts slowly usually means a starving pump, a clogged breather, or low fluid. Documentation, Inspections, and Liability
Here’s the part nobody enjoys: if it isn’t written down, it didn’t happen. When an incident occurs and an insurer or an attorney starts asking questions, a maintenance log is the difference between a shop that did its job and a shop that hopes somebody remembers. ANSI/ALI ALOIM — the standard that governs lift operation, inspection, and maintenance — calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector plus documented periodic maintenance by the owner. That documentation requirement is not optional in any meaningful sense.
Keep it simple. A clipboard by the lift, one line per month, date and initials, plus notes on anything replaced. Record anchor retorque values, fluid changes, cable replacements, and part numbers. When we come out for an annual inspection, the shops with a log get through it fast because we’re verifying rather than discovering. The shops without one usually get a list. When To Repair, When To Replace, and How We Help
We fix far more lifts than we replace, and we’ll tell you honestly when a lift isn’t worth more money. A twenty-year-old Rotary SPO or a Challenger of similar vintage with sound columns, good concrete, and available parts is usually worth rebuilding — cables, sheaves, slide blocks, lock assemblies, a cylinder reseal, and a power unit if needed will often cost a fraction of new and buy another decade. Those lifts were built well and parts support is still there.
The lifts we recommend replacing are the ones with structural problems: cracked welds at the carriage or arm pivots, bent columns from an impact, corrosion through the base plate, or a serial range with no parts availability at all. Structural repair on a lifting device is not a weld-it-and-hope situation.
