Every 2 post lift sold in this country has to have a mechanical locking system, and the safety cam is that system. It’s a spring-loaded piece of steel that rides against the toothed rack on the column and drops into a notch every couple inches of travel. If the hydraulic cylinder loses pressure, the cam catches the load before the carriage can free-fall. That’s the entire point of 2 post lift safety cam maintenance — making sure that backup is actually going to work the one time it’s needed.

The problem is that cams are quiet performers. A worn cam doesn’t make noise, doesn’t leak, and doesn’t throw a warning light. It just sits there looking fine until the day it doesn’t catch. We’ve pulled cams off lifts that were rounded off at the engagement tip, had a cracked casting, or had a return spring so weak the cam wasn’t dropping into the rack at all. A proper maintenance routine starts with a visual inspection at every oil change or at minimum every 90 days for a shop running the lift daily. Raise the lift empty, let it settle onto the cams, and look at the engagement point on both columns. You’re checking that the cam tooth is fully seated in the rack notch, that there’s no visible rounding or chipping on the cam edge, and that both sides are engaging at the same height. Uneven engagement side to side is one of the earliest signs of a bent cam or a rack that’s collecting debris.

Next we check the return spring tension by hand. The cam should snap back into position with authority when you pull it away from the rack — a sluggish or weak return means the spring is fatigued and the cam may hesitate on the way up, missing a notch. We also clean the rack itself with a wire brush and light lubricant, because grease buildup mixed with shop dust turns into a paste that can keep a cam from seating fully. The Drop Test We Run on Every Service Call

Visual inspection catches obvious wear, but the real test is functional. Any perceptible fall — even an inch — means the cam isn’t fully engaged or the rack notch is worn oversized. We do this on both columns independently, because one side passing doesn’t mean the other side will.

Cams are inexpensive relative to the liability they carry, so our rule of thumb is simple: if you see any rounding, cracking, or bending, replace rather than repair. There’s no safe way to grind a cam back to spec and trust it under a vehicle. The same goes for return springs — if tension is questionable, swap the spring rather than stretching it or adding a shim.

Racks are a different story. A rack with light surface wear can often be cleaned and continue in service, but a rack with rounded or chipped notches needs replacement because it changes how deep the cam can seat.
