If you’re a weekend mechanic in east-central Iowa buying a lift mainly to store a project car or a summer vehicle over the winter, the 220v car lift hydraulic power unit is the one spec sheet detail people skip past — and it’s the one that causes the most buyer’s remorse. We get calls every fall from hobbyists who bought a lift online, got it delivered, and only then realized their garage wiring wasn’t going to support it. Before you buy, run through this checklist. Many BendPak and Atlas models offer both a 110v and a 220v power unit configuration, and the two aren’t interchangeable after the fact without swapping the whole unit. If you’re only storing a car seasonally — pulling it up in October and leaving it there until April — a 110v unit is often plenty, since you’re not running the lift up and down all day the way a working shop would.

We had a hobbyist in east-central Iowa call us last fall convinced he needed 220v because that’s what a forum thread told him. Once we walked through his actual use case — one car, up in fall, down in spring, maybe raised twice more for undercarriage cleaning — we pointed him to a 110v configuration instead, which saved him an electrician visit entirely. The lesson: match the power unit to how often you’ll actually cycle the lift, not to what sounds more heavy-duty.

Check Two: What Breaker Size Does the Spec Sheet Actually Call For

If you do need 220v, the spec sheet will list a required breaker amperage — usually 20 or 30 amp for home-garage models. Don’t assume your garage’s existing 220 outlet, if you have one, matches. We’ve seen plenty of garages with a 220v receptacle installed years ago for a welder or table saw that’s wired to a breaker too small for a car lift’s hydraulic power unit, especially under a heavier load like lifting a full-size pickup.

Before you buy, open your panel and check the breaker rating on any existing 220 circuit, and compare it against the exact number on the lift’s spec sheet — not a rough guess, the actual printed amperage. If they don’t match, budget for an electrician before the lift arrives, not after. It’s a lot easier to have that conversation with a delivery date two weeks out than with a lift sitting crated in your driveway.

Check Three: Compare Motor Horsepower Across Model Numbers

When you’re comparing model numbers side by side, motor horsepower on the 220v car lift hydraulic power unit is one of the more telling specs. A slightly larger motor generally means faster lift and lower cycles, which matters more in a working shop than in a storage scenario. For seasonal storage use, a smaller motor on the power unit is completely fine — you’re not paying a premium for speed you won’t use.

Look at model numbers with a track record — Rotary and Challenger for heavier-duty setups, BendPak and Atlas for home garages — rather than unfamiliar off-brand units where parts and seal kits may be hard to source two years from now when you actually need them.

Model comparison shopping often skips the practical timeline question, and it shouldn’t. Once you order, most lifts take one and a half to two weeks to arrive, and then install needs to be scheduled on top of that. If you’re trying to get a car up before the first snow, ordering in early October with an expectation of an installed lift by Halloween is realistic — waiting until mid-November is cutting it close.

If you’re comparing model numbers between suppliers, ask each one directly what their combined delivery-plus-install timeline actually looks like, not just the manufacturer’s shipping estimate, since those two numbers are often very different in practice.

Check Five: Does Your Garage Even Have 220V Available

This sounds basic, but it’s the number one thing hobbyist buyers get wrong. Plenty of older garages in east-central Iowa were built with 110v outlets only, and some homeowners assume any 220v car lift hydraulic power unit can just be rewired to run on what’s already there. It can’t — the power unit is built around the voltage it’s designed for, and running it on the wrong service either won’t work at all or will damage the motor.

It’s tempting to compare model numbers purely on price, but for a power unit specifically, warranty terms and parts availability matter more over the life of the lift. A cheaper power unit that fails in year three and can’t get a replacement pump quickly isn’t actually cheaper. We’ve fielded calls from hobbyists whose off-brand power unit died and the only replacement pump available took weeks to source from overseas.

Stick to brands with established parts distribution in the Midwest. When a seal kit, motor, or pump for your 220v car lift hydraulic power unit needs replacing, you want that part on a shelf somewhere within driving distance, not backordered for a month while your project car sits stuck in the air.

Check Seven: Talk to an Installer Before You Buy, Not After
