Most two-post and four-post lifts in the United States run on a 220-volt single-phase circuit, and getting that circuit wrong — wrong breaker size, wrong wire gauge, wrong outlet — is one of the most common reasons an install gets delayed a week past when it should have been running. What voltage and amperage do most lifts actually need?

The vast majority of two-post and four-post lifts sold in the U.S. — Rotary, BendPak, Atlas, Challenger — use a single-phase 220-240 volt motor, typically pulling somewhere between 15 and 30 amps depending on horsepower and lift capacity. That’s the baseline for 220v electrical for lifts in almost every residential and light-commercial install we do. A home-garage 4-post or a 9,000-10,000 lb two-post typically wants a dedicated 20 or 30 amp 220v circuit, while heavier 12,000-15,000 lb commercial units can call for a larger breaker and heavier wire gauge. The lift’s owner’s manual and data tag will always list the exact motor amperage and recommended breaker size — never guess off a similar-looking model, because horsepower and duty cycle vary even within the same product line.

We tell every customer to pull the electrical spec sheet before the electrician shows up, not after. It saves a return trip and it means the breaker, wire, and outlet all get sized correctly on the first pass. Dedicated circuit: why it’s non-negotiable

Every lift needs its own dedicated 220v circuit — not a shared circuit with an air compressor, a welder, or shop lighting. This is the single biggest mistake we see in garages that tried to save money on the electrical portion of a lift install. A shared circuit works fine until the compressor kicks on mid-lift and trips the breaker with a vehicle in the air, which is not where you want a surprise. Proper 220v electrical for lifts means one breaker, one run of wire, one outlet (or hardwired connection), dedicated to that lift and nothing else.

This matters even more in multi-bay commercial shops where several lifts might run near-simultaneously. Each lift gets its own circuit sized to its own motor, run back to its own breaker in the panel. We’ve been called into shops where a previous installer daisy-chained two lifts off one circuit to save wire, and it works right up until both lifts get used at once — then everything trips and a technician is stuck holding a vehicle mid-air waiting on an electrician. Outlet, plug, or hardwired — which is right for your lift?

Most residential lift installs use a NEMA 6-20 or 6-30 outlet and matching plug, which lets the lift be unplugged for service or moved if the garage layout changes. Commercial installs, especially in shops with concrete floors already poured and conduit run through the slab, are more often hardwired directly into a junction box at the lift’s power unit. Both approaches satisfy the 220v electrical for lifts requirement — the choice usually comes down to whether you want the flexibility of a plug or the cleaner, more permanent look of a hardwired connection.

We generally recommend the outlet-and-plug setup for home garages, since it’s easier for a future owner or a different electrician to understand at a glance, and it lets you disconnect power completely during any lift service or annual inspection without an electrician on site. For busy commercial bays, hardwiring reduces the chance of an outlet loosening over years of vibration and heavy use. Either way, the receptacle or junction box should be mounted at a height and location that keeps the cord or conduit out of the way of vehicle doors and foot traffic.

Wire gauge and run length matter more than people think

Amperage tells you the minimum wire gauge, but the length of the run from your panel to the lift changes the math. A 30 amp circuit run 15 feet from the panel needs a different wire gauge than the same 30 amp circuit run 80 feet across a large pole barn or commercial bay. Voltage drop over a long run can leave a lift motor underpowered, causing it to strain, run hot, or trip the breaker under load even though the amperage on paper looked fine. Any electrician doing 220v electrical for lifts work should be calculating for actual run length, not just amperage.

This is especially relevant for Iowa’s larger detached garages and pole-barn shops, where the electrical panel is sometimes a long way from where the lift will actually sit. If your layout has a long run, it’s worth having the electrician upsize the wire gauge one step beyond the bare minimum — it costs a little more copper up front and eliminates a whole category of nuisance trips and premature motor wear down the road.

Permits and inspection — don’t skip this step

In most Iowa municipalities, adding a new 220v circuit requires an electrical permit and inspection, even in a residential garage. Skipping the permit might save a small fee today but it becomes a real problem at resale, insurance claim time, or if anything ever goes wrong with the circuit. If your shop already has three-phase service from a previous tenant or a nearby industrial hookup, it’s worth checking before you buy equipment, since running the wrong lift on the wrong phase setup either won’t work at all or will need a phase converter added to the job. For most home garages and typical light-commercial bays, single-phase 220v electrical for lifts is what you’ll be dealing with, and three-phase is the exception rather than the rule. Planning ahead: rough-in before the slab, not after
