Before we talk price with a restoration shop, we ask what the lift is actually going to do day to day. Storing a finished build is one thing. On a four-post, the vehicle sits on runways with no arms holding it in place the way a two-post lift cradles a car under the frame. That’s fine for straight up-and-down storage. But once you start pulling on a wheel bearing, applying a breaker bar to a hub nut, or using a slide hammer, you’re introducing lateral force that can walk a vehicle sideways on the runways over time if nothing restrains it.

Arm restraint kits add a mechanical stop or cross-brace element that keeps the vehicle centered and prevents that creep during aggressive service work. For a restoration shop doing bearing jobs regularly, we consider this close to mandatory rather than optional, because a car that shifts three inches while someone has a hub apart is a real hazard, not a hypothetical one. We spec this into the 4 car lift order upfront for any shop telling us their primary use is hands-on mechanical work rather than pure storage.

Step 3: Match Capacity to the Actual Vehicle, Not the Average

Restoration shops tend to have a wider spread of vehicle weights than a typical repair shop, everything from a lightweight roadster project to a full-frame truck or wagon build. Step 4: Concrete and Anchoring for a Service-Rated Lift

Safety cams and arm restraints only work if the lift itself is anchored into concrete that can handle the load. We always pull concrete thickness and cure time before finalizing a 4 car lift order, because a unit with full safety engagement still relies on properly torqued anchors into slab that meets the manufacturer’s minimum thickness, typically around four inches of standard, cured concrete for most four-post columns. Older shop floors, especially in converted buildings, sometimes fall short of that, and we’ve had to recommend a concrete pad addition before installation on more than one Ankeny-area job.
