How Cables Work on a 4 Car Lift

A 4 car lift built for platform-style service typically uses a cable synchronization system that ties the four columns together so all corners rise and lower evenly. On most residential and light-commercial models, that means a cable running from each rear post, over a sheave near the top of the runway, down to a turnbuckle or tensioning point at the front — with the front and rear runways cross-connected so the whole platform stays level even if the load isn’t perfectly centered. For a shop doing dozens of oil changes a day, that synchronization system is working every single time a vehicle goes up or down.

The cables themselves are usually 5/16 inch to 3/8 inch diameter, depending on the model and weight rating, made from galvanized aircraft-grade steel wire rope. On a 9,000 lb rated 4 post lift — a common capacity for shops handling everything from sedans to work trucks — you’re looking at cables engineered with a substantial safety margin above the rated load, but that margin erodes with wear, corrosion, and repeated flex cycles over years of daily use. A shop running dozens of lift cycles per day puts far more flex cycles on those cables in a year than a home garage would rack up in a decade.

Inspection Intervals That Actually Matter

We tell every shop customer the same baseline: visually inspect cables monthly, and do a hands-on inspection — actually running your hand along the cable length, checking sheaves, and testing tension — quarterly at minimum. For a family-owned shop doing high-volume oil changes and fluid service, where the lift cycles dozens of times a day, we push that to monthly hands-on inspections instead of quarterly, because the wear accumulates faster than a low-volume shop would ever see.

What we’re looking for specifically: broken or frayed strands (even one broken strand is a red flag), flat spots where the cable has worn against a sheave groove, rust or corrosion especially near the end fittings, and any kink or bend that’s permanently deformed the cable’s shape. We also check tension equally across all four cables — if one side is noticeably looser than the others, that’s often the first sign of stretch or a slipping anchor point, and it should be adjusted immediately rather than left to correct itself, because it won’t.

Real Numbers: When to Replace, Not Adjust

Adjustment and replacement are two different conversations, and family shops often try to solve a replacement problem with an adjustment, which is a mistake we see often. If a cable has any visible broken strands, replace it — full stop, no adjustment fixes broken wire rope. If a cable shows more than roughly 10% reduction in diameter from wear or corrosion, replace it. If you’re re-tensioning the same cable more than once every few months just to keep the platform level, that’s a sign of stretch beyond normal service life, and it’s time to replace rather than keep adjusting.

Most manufacturers rate cable service life in cycles rather than years specifically because usage volume varies so much between a home garage and a working shop. For a high-cycle environment like daily oil changes and fluid service, we generally see cables on a 9,000 lb 4 post lift needing replacement somewhere in the 3 to 5 year range under heavy daily use, versus 8 to 10 years or more in a low-volume home garage. If your shop has been running the same original cables for longer than that without a full inspection and possible replacement, it’s worth having us take a look before the next oil change, not after a failure.

What Cable Failure Actually Looks Like

Cable failure on a 4 post platform rarely happens without warning signs first, which is exactly why inspection intervals matter so much. Before a full break, you’ll typically see one corner of the platform start to sag or tilt slightly, unusual noise during raising or lowering, or visible fraying at a sheave contact point. The lift’s safety lock system is designed to catch a sudden drop if a cable does fail completely, but that’s a backup, not a substitute for catching problems early — and a locked-out lift with a vehicle stuck on it mid-service is a bad day for any shop, family-owned or otherwise.

We’ve been called out to shops where a technician noticed the platform wasn’t sitting level and kept using the lift anyway for another week before calling, assuming it would sort itself out. It doesn’t. Uneven cable tension accelerates wear on the tighter side and the sheave it’s running through, which compounds the problem instead of self-correcting. Catching that lean in the first day instead of the eighth day is the difference between a routine cable adjustment and a full cable and sheave replacement.

Sheaves, Pulleys, and the Parts Around the Cable

Cables don’t fail in isolation — the sheaves and pulleys they run over wear too, and a groove that’s developed a flat spot or burr will chew through a brand-new cable just as fast as the old worn one. Whenever we replace cables on a 4 car lift for a shop customer, we inspect every sheave in the system at the same time, because installing fresh cable over a damaged pulley just resets the clock on the same failure. This is especially true for shops in northern Missouri and similar climates where road salt, moisture, and temperature swings accelerate corrosion on any exposed metal component.

We also check the anchor points and turnbuckles at each adjustment point, since those threads corrode and can seize over years of service, making future adjustments harder than they should be.
