Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

Before we quote a 4 car lift for oil pan gasket work or general repair, we need the real number from floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — not the wall height, not the peak, but the lowest point a lift arm, safety lock, or vehicle roof could hit. That means ductwork, sprinkler heads, garage door tracks, and even hanging shop lights all count. A shop running gasket jobs needs enough clearance to fully raise the vehicle to comfortable working height, usually chest level or higher, and still clear the top of the lift’s crossbeam or overhead beam design.

We’ve seen quotes fall apart because someone measured to the roof deck and forgot about a 14-inch HVAC duct running the length of the bay. For a shop doing oil pan work specifically, you want enough height that a technician can stand upright underneath without ducking, since that job means spending real time working overhead. We always ask for a photo looking straight up at the ceiling from where the lift will sit, plus a tape measurement to the lowest hanging object. That single step eliminates most surprise change orders on install day.

Concrete Thickness and Rebar Considerations

Every 4 car lift anchors into the slab, and the slab is doing all the structural work — not the bolts, the concrete. We generally want a minimum of 4 inches of solid, uncracked concrete rated at 3,000 PSI or better, though for heavier capacity models in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range we prefer 5 to 6 inches. Garages with infloor heat or rebar mesh need special attention because anchor points have to avoid hitting a heat line or getting placed where rebar interferes with proper embedment depth.

We’ve worked with family shops where the existing slab was original to a building built decades ago, and coring a test hole before delivery told us everything we needed to know about hidden cracks or aggregate quality. If your Sioux City garage has a driveway apron or a floor that’s been patched over the years, flag that during the survey — it changes anchor placement and sometimes changes which lift model we’d even recommend for that footprint.

Bay Width and Column Spacing

A true 4 car lift setup, whether that’s a single 4-post unit storing two vehicles stacked or a bay configured for four vehicles across multiple lifts, needs real width. We typically ask for at least 12 to 14 feet of clear width per lift footprint, plus walking clearance on both sides so a technician isn’t squeezing between the column and the wall during a gasket job. Column spacing also has to account for the vehicle’s wheelbase and track width — a longer truck needs a longer deck, and mismatching deck length to vehicle length is one of the most common mistakes we catch during a site survey.

For garages planning to run two vehicles side by side rather than stacked, we map out door swing, tool chest placement, and where a technician’s creeper will actually travel. A cramped bay might technically fit the lift dimensions on paper but be miserable to actually work in day to day. We’d rather catch that in the planning phase than after the anchors are set.

Door Height vs Ceiling Height

Sioux City garages built with residential-style overhead doors often have a door header that’s lower than the peak ceiling height, and that header height controls whether a stacked vehicle can actually drive in and out once the lower vehicle is parked. We measure door height separately from ceiling height every single time, because a shop can have 14 feet of ceiling and still be limited to a 7-foot door opening that caps what can roll underneath a raised vehicle.

This matters even more for a family-owned shop doing daily oil pan and general repair work, where vehicles are coming and going constantly rather than sitting in long-term storage. Power, Air, and Utility Placement

Hydraulic 4 car lift models need a dedicated electrical circuit sized to the power unit’s motor, and we confirm voltage, amperage, and outlet location during the survey rather than assuming the existing garage wiring will work. Air-assisted safety locks need a compressor line run to the lift location too, and running that line after the lift is already anchored is more work than doing it during the initial prep.

We also map out where the power unit itself will sit, since it needs to be within hose reach of the columns but out of the walking path. For a working shop doing gasket repairs and fluid changes daily, we also think about drain placement and floor drains near the lift footprint, since fluid handling around a raised vehicle is a daily reality, not an occasional event. Getting utilities right during prep means the lift is fully functional the day it’s installed, not waiting on an electrician for another week.

Anchor Bolt Depth and Torque Specs

Every 4 car lift ships with a manufacturer anchor spec — bolt diameter, embedment depth, and torque value — and skipping that spec is the single most common cause of a lift failing inspection later. We use a calibrated torque wrench on every install and document each anchor’s torque reading, because an under-torqued anchor can walk loose over months of daily use, and an over-torqued anchor can crack the surrounding concrete.

For a family garage that’s been open for three generations, we know equipment gets used hard, day in and day out, so we don’t cut corners on anchor prep. If the concrete tests soft during drilling, we’ll flag it immediately rather than force an anchor into marginal material. It’s a lot cheaper to pour a new pad section before the lift arrives than to deal with anchor pull-out after a vehicle is already sitting eight feet in the air.

Delivery Logistics and Mobile Access

A 4 car lift is heavy and awkward to move, and Sioux City deliveries sometimes involve tight alley access, narrow driveways, or a loading dock that isn’t built for a full-size delivery truck.
