A four-column set is built around vehicles that sit on two axles and fit within the reach of four evenly spaced columns:
- Straight trucks such as box trucks, dump trucks, and single-unit work trucks.
- Transit and shuttle buses that ride on a standard two-axle layout.
- Heavy service vehicles such as utility, municipal, and delivery units.
The moment a vehicle carries a third axle, an unusually long wheelbase, or weight beyond what four columns can share, you move up to six or eight columns. More on that below.
How to size capacity per column, with margin
Sizing a 4 column lift starts with per-column capacity, not total capacity. Each column carries roughly one wheel’s share of the load, and quality columns are rated well into the heavy range per unit. To size correctly:
- Start from gross vehicle weight, not curb weight. Use the loaded weight you actually lift, including fuel, tools, and any body or upfit.
- Divide across the columns, then add margin. Do not spec a set whose total rating barely equals your heaviest vehicle. Leave headroom so you are never running at the ceiling.
- Watch uneven weight distribution. A vehicle that carries more on one axle loads those columns harder, so the limiting number is the heaviest corner, not the average.

A modern 4 column lift is coordinated electronically so all four columns rise and lock together, and you choose how the set is controlled and powered:
- Wireless vs. cabled control. Wireless sets remove trip hazards and speed up repositioning; cabled sets are simple and dependable.
- Individual or grouped operation. Run all columns together, or address them in pairs for precise leveling.
- Battery vs. shop power. Battery-powered columns roll anywhere without hunting for an outlet; corded sets keep running without charge management. Many sets offer both.
- Locking positions. Multiple mechanical lock heights let you set a safe working height and take the load off the hydraulics.

When to step up to six or eight columns
A four-column set covers a lot of ground, but a longer or heavier vehicle needs more columns for the same reasons a four-column set works for a straight truck: one column per wheel keeps the load balanced.
- Six columns suit three-axle vehicles and longer buses where four columns cannot reach every wheel or would be overloaded.
- Eight columns handle the longest and heaviest work, including articulated buses and rail equipment, where the load must be spread across four axles.
