Pulling a CV axle or half-shaft means the vehicle sits loaded at height for extended periods while you work underneath, often with a slide hammer or breaker bar putting shock loads through the suspension and down into the frame. That sustained, uneven weight is exactly the kind of duty cycle that accelerates wear on a hydraulic cylinder’s internal seals. A 4 post car lift for home garage use that mostly stores cars sees gentle, brief pressure cycles; a shop doing regular half-shaft and CV joint work puts the cylinder through longer holds under jarring loads, which is harder on the seal lips than most owners realize.

The third, and most serious, is a hissing or spongy feel when the lift is under load, which means air or fluid is bypassing the seal under pressure rather than just leaking slowly at rest.

None of these mean the lift is unsafe to use immediately, since mechanical locks on a quality 4-post are the actual safety backup, not the hydraulics. But they mean the cylinder is telling you it needs service, and ignoring drift for months lets contamination and further wear compound the problem until a full cylinder replacement is your only option instead of a simple seal kit.

Cylinder Dimensions: What Actually Determines Your Kit

Hydraulic cylinders on home-garage 4-post lifts commonly run bore diameters between 2.5 and 3.5 inches, with stroke lengths tied directly to your lift’s rise — a 9,000 lb Rotary or BendPak model with roughly 69 to 72 inches of platform rise typically pairs with a cylinder stroke somewhere in the 68 to 70 inch range, though this varies by exact model. Rod diameter matters just as much as bore; most home-lift cylinders use a 1.25 to 1.5 inch rod, and the seal kit has to match that rod diameter precisely or you’ll get leakage past the rod seal within weeks of installation.

This is why we always ask for a model number and, ideally, the number stamped on the cylinder itself before quoting a rebuild kit — bore and rod dimensions that are off by even an eighth of an inch will not seal correctly. Rebuild vs. Full Replacement: The Real Decision

If the cylinder barrel itself is straight, free of scoring, and the chrome on the rod isn’t pitted or corroded, a seal kit is almost always the right call — it’s a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder and, done correctly, restores performance to like-new condition. But if you’re seeing scoring inside the bore, a rod that’s visibly bent or pitted, or corrosion that’s eaten into the metal (common in shops near livestock operations or with high humidity), no seal kit will hold long-term, and replacement is the honest answer.
