A collector in northeast Iowa called us last year with a garage full of vehicles and nowhere left to park them, and by the time we finished the install, his 4-post drive on car lift had become the most-used piece of equipment in the building. The Problem: Storage Space Running Out

Like a lot of collectors, our customer had accumulated vehicles faster than he’d added garage space. A couple of daily drivers, a project car, and a weekend cruiser were all competing for the same three bays, and parking one car over another was the only way to make it work. A 4-post drive on car lift was the obvious answer because it doubles usable floor space in a garage without any structural addition, letting one vehicle park underneath while another sits elevated on the runways.

What made this collector’s situation typical of northeast Iowa garages we work in is the building itself: a pole-building shop with a concrete slab poured for vehicle storage rather than heavy repair work. That distinction matters because storage-rated concrete and repair-rated concrete aren’t always built to the same specification, and it’s one of the first things we checked before recommending a capacity and column footprint for his specific slab.

Measuring Before Buying: Ceiling Height and Door Swing

Choosing Capacity: Storage Versus Working Loads

That’s a mistake we catch often — someone quotes based on the car they think about most, not the truck that occasionally pulls into the same bay. Install Day: What Actually Happened

He mentioned the biggest adjustment wasn’t the lift itself but getting used to driving onto elevated runways confidently, something that gets easier after the first handful of times.

He also started using the rolling jacks more than he originally expected, mostly for seasonal tire swaps across the collection. The First Alignment Job

But for diagnostic access, visual inspection, and basic adjustments, it gave him far more capability than working on jack stands ever could, and it turned what would have been a shop appointment into an evening in his own garage.

One Year Later: What We’d Tell Other Collectors

A year in, this collector’s biggest lesson was that he should have sized the runway length slightly longer given how his collection kept growing. It’s a common theme with collectors in northeast Iowa and beyond: the vehicle count on install day is rarely the vehicle count twelve months later. If you’re in that position, we’d always rather talk through your five-year plan for the collection before finalizing dimensions than have you outgrow the setup in year two.

His other takeaway was that the rolling jacks turned out to matter more than he expected going in, since storage and light maintenance blend together once you actually own a 4-post drive on car lift.
