Configuration A: Low-Clearance Bay With a Standard 12-Foot Ceiling
A lot of the older commercial buildings we service in Urbandale were built with 11 to 12-foot ceilings, which is tight for a 4-post drive on car lift once you stack platform height, vehicle height, and safety clearance to any duct work or sprinkler heads. Configuration B: Tall Bay With 14-Foot-Plus Ceilings

Taller ceilings also mean the door swing becomes almost irrelevant, since the platform has enough headroom that it doesn’t need to sit tucked away from the door track to clear it safely.
For brake and rotor work specifically, taller bays let techs stand fully upright under the vehicle, which matters over an 8 or 9-hour shift when you’re doing multiple rotor swaps back to back. The tradeoff independent shops need to understand going in is that a standard drive-on runway leaves the wheels on the platform, which blocks wheel removal unless you add rolling jacks between the runways. That’s a small add-on cost, but it’s non-negotiable for a brake shop — without it, you’re limited to underbody work and can’t actually pull the wheel off to service the rotor.
