We always ask for width and depth measurements of the actual bay, not just the garage overall, because support posts, shelving, and water heaters eat into usable space fast.
For sequencing purposes, this means measuring your intended bay before you ever request a quote. If you’re still framing or finishing the garage, build in a few extra inches of clearance on each side of where the lift will sit. It’s far easier to plan for that now than to discover during installation that a stud wall or storage cabinet needs to move.
Tire Rotation and Wheel Work Change the Accessory List
If tire rotation and wheel work are the main reason you want a 4 post home garage lift, your accessory list looks different than someone using the lift purely for storage. Rolling bridge jacks that sit between the runways let you lift the vehicle’s wheels off the ground so tires spin freely, which you can’t do on a straight 4 post platform alone. These add-ons are worth specifying up front because they affect runway spacing and sometimes the overall footprint of the lift.

If tire and brake work is a regular task for you, budget for the rolling jack from the start rather than adding it later, since retrofitting can mean reordering parts specific to your lift model.

The last sequencing item that trips people up is electrical. Most 4 post home garage lifts run on a dedicated circuit, and depending on the model that might be a 220V single-phase connection.
