The most expensive 4 post lift installation mistakes we see in Iowa garages almost never involve a broken part — they involve a decision made two hours before the lift ever came off the trailer. We are Auto Lift Services out of Ames, and between installs, service calls, and parts orders, our crews walk into a few dozen four-post setups every year that somebody else assembled. Some are close to perfect. Others have runways an inch and a half out of level, cables routed against sheave flanges, and a slab that was never going to hold. This article walks through the errors we correct most often, why they happen, and how to avoid paying twice for the same lift.

Mistake One: Trusting a Slab You Never Verified

Four-post lifts spread load across four base plates, which makes people assume concrete is a non-issue. It is not. We have drilled into 3-inch residential garage pours with no rebar, poured over gravel that had settled unevenly, and found expansion joints running directly under a runway leg. A four-post carries less anchor shear than a two-post, but the vertical bearing load under each column is substantial once you park a three-quarter-ton truck up there and then park a second vehicle underneath.

Before any install, we want to know slab thickness, age, and whether the pour is sitting on compacted fill. A cheap rotary hammer test hole in each column location tells you more than any guess. If the concrete is thin, the fix is straightforward — cut and pour footing pads at each column, let them cure, then install. That adds days, not dollars in the thousands. Skipping this step is one of the 4 post lift installation mistakes that shows up months later as a column that has visibly tilted, a runway that no longer sits square, and a lift that will not lower evenly. Mistake Two: Building It Where the Vehicle Can’t Actually Go

Layout errors are the most common problem we get called about, and they are the hardest to undo. A four-post is a drive-on lift, which means it needs approach room, not just footprint room. We regularly see lifts positioned so a full-size pickup can technically fit between the columns but cannot make the turn from the overhead door onto the runways without a fifteen-point maneuver. Two feet of extra clearance at the approach end is worth more than two feet anywhere else.

The second half of this is vertical math. People measure ceiling height and stop. You need ceiling height minus vehicle height on the runways, minus the runway deck thickness, and you need to know where the garage door track, the door opener, and any light fixtures live at full rise. In central Iowa a lot of the residential garages we work in have 10-foot ceilings, and that is workable for storage stacking with a low-profile car on top — but not with a lifted Silverado. Getting the geometry wrong ranks near the top of our 4 post lift installation mistakes list because the only real remedy is disassembly and relocation. Sketch the bay on paper, tape the footprint on the floor, and drive the actual vehicle over the tape before anything gets bolted.

Mistake Three: Calling the Lift Level When It Isn’t

A four-post is a leveling job first and a mechanical assembly second. Columns need to be plumb, runways need to be level to each other, and the whole assembly needs to sit square. Most quality lifts ship with shim packs for exactly this reason, and most DIY installs either skip them or use two shims where six were needed. A slab with a floor drain slope — which describes a huge share of Iowa shop bays — guarantees you will need shimming.

What goes wrong when it is off: the cables load unevenly, one corner carries more than its share, the safety locks stop dropping into their ladders at the same moment, and the lift develops the clunk that owners describe to us as “it drops the last inch.” That is not a hydraulic problem, it is a geometry problem. We use a laser level across both runways and check diagonals corner to corner, and we recheck after the first cycle under load because things settle. Uneven runways also destroy any hope of doing alignment work on the lift, which matters if you bought a four-post specifically for that. Spend the extra hour here and you eliminate the majority of the nuisance complaints that follow bad installs.

Mistake Four: Cable Routing and Sheave Errors

Lifting cables on a four-post run through sheaves at the top and bottom of the columns and across the runways. They are supposed to sit centered in each sheave groove with nothing rubbing. What we find instead: cables crossed at the crossmember, cables riding the flange of a sheave instead of the groove, sheaves installed with the retaining hardware backward, and cables that were routed before a runway was in final position so they are now under a twist.

Any of these will shred a cable. We sell replacement cables constantly, and a meaningful share of those orders trace back to a routing error at install rather than genuine wear. A cable that has been rubbing a flange for six months shows broken outer strands and a shiny wear stripe — it is unmistakable once you know to look. Equalizing the cables is the other half of this. All four need equal tension so the runways rise together and the safety locks engage in unison. Chasing that adjustment is tedious the first time and quick every time after. If you are already dealing with a lift someone else put in, pull the cables through your fingers with the lift down and look for high strands before you trust it with a vehicle.

Mistake Five: Hydraulic and Air Line Shortcuts

The power unit side is where impatience shows up. We see lines run without cleaning fittings, so the first thing the new pump does is circulate teflon tape and metal shavings through a fresh valve body. We see systems filled with the wrong fluid — automatic transmission fluid in a unit spec’d for hydraulic oil, or hydraulic oil in a unit that wanted ATF. We see air lines to the safety-release system that leak just enough that the locks partially disengage overnight.

Bleeding is the other recurring item. A four-post with air trapped in the cylinder rises in stages and feels spongy, and owners assume the pump is weak. It usually isn’t. Run the lift to full height and back down several times with no load, crack the bleeder, and top off the reservoir — most of those “weak pump” calls resolve in twenty minutes. And route the lines where they will not get pinched by a runway or crushed by a tire. Among 4 post lift installation mistakes, hydraulic shortcuts are the cheapest to prevent and the most annoying to diagnose after the fact, because the symptoms all mimic a failing power unit.

Mistake Six: Treating the Safety Systems as Optional

Every four-post has mechanical safety locks in each column and, on most models, a slack-cable device that stops the lift if a cable loses tension. These are the systems that keep a lift from becoming a fatality. They are also the systems people bypass because a lock is chattering or a sensor is nuisance-tripping during install.

We have found locks wired open, slack-cable arms bent out of the way, and safety ladders installed at different heights column to column so only two of four locks ever catch. That last one is genuinely terrifying and it comes straight from skipping the level check. Test every lock, on every column, at multiple heights, before the lift ever holds a vehicle. Raise it, lower onto the locks, and listen for four distinct engagements. Then set your drive-through ramps and wheel stops properly — a vehicle rolling off the end of a runway is a real event that happens in real shops. This is also the point where we walk owners through daily and monthly checks, because a lift that was installed correctly and never inspected again will eventually find a way to hurt somebody.

Mistake Seven: No Documentation, No Inspection, No Plan

The last of the 4 post lift installation mistakes is paperwork, and it is the one people laugh at until an insurance adjuster or an OSHA inspector asks. Keep the manual. Record the model and serial number somewhere that is not a sticker inside a column. Note the install date and who did the work. Schedule an annual inspection — ALI-certified inspection is the standard for commercial bays and a smart habit for home garages too.

The practical payoff is parts. When somebody calls us needing a cable, a sheave, a lock ladder, or a cylinder seal kit, the first question is model and serial. With that, we can usually ship the correct component the same week. Without it, we are trading photos and tape-measure readings, and the odds of a wrong part go up sharply. Documentation also protects resale value on home lifts, which move around central Iowa more than people expect.
