Sheaves, Bearings, and the Noise That Tells You First
Sheaves are the pulleys the cables ride over, and they fail quietly until they don’t. A worn sheave develops a groove deeper than the cable diameter, which pinches the wire and accelerates strand breakage. A seized sheave bearing stops the pulley from turning entirely, so the cable saws across a stationary surface — that’s when you get the flat spots and the metal dust on the column top.
