Four-post lifts move on rollers — the small hardened wheels that guide each runway up and down the columns and route the equalizer cables around sheaves. When those rollers wear flat, gall, or seize, the lift chatters at the columns, one runway walks ahead of the other, and cables start jumping their tracks. Where the rollers live on a 4-post lift
A four-post lift has two families of rollers. First, cable sheave rollers: grooved wheels at the top of each column and inside each runway that route the four equalizer cables from the drive cylinder around to each corner. Second, guide rollers: pairs of small rollers on the inside of each runway that ride against the column faces to keep the runway aligned as it moves. Some lifts also use polymer slider blocks in place of guide rollers on lighter models. Every one of these components is a wear part, and any of them can be the source of a rough-running lift, so a proper 4 post lift roller replacement starts with identifying which rollers are actually shot.
Wear signs: what a failing roller sounds and feels like
Four symptoms should send you looking at rollers. First, chatter — a rhythmic clunk-clunk as the runway travels up or down, usually from a flat spot worn onto one guide roller. Second, uneven runway travel: one corner of the lift arrives at the top a half-inch behind the others, because a seized sheave roller is dragging a cable. Third, cable derailment — the equalizer cable jumps out of the sheave groove and lands on the shaft or the housing, which usually means the sheave roller is worn to a knife-edge or the sheave bearing has failed. Fourth, visible damage: crushed roller faces, cracked flanges, or shafts spinning inside brackets. Any of these is a call for 4 post lift roller replacement, and if one is worn the others are usually not far behind.
Rotary 4-post roller kits
Rotary four-post lifts (SM14, SM18, SM122, SM144, ARO14, ARO18) use hardened steel guide rollers on machined pins with grease fittings, and grooved cable sheaves at each column top and each runway end. Rotary sells the guide rollers as service kits with new pins, snap rings, and grease fittings; the sheaves are sold individually and matched to the cable diameter. Challenger 4-post roller kits
Challenger four-post lifts (4015, 4018, 4030, 40000, 44000, 44030) use their own guide roller and sheave design with Challenger part numbers. Same function as Rotary, different bearings and bracket geometry. Challenger sells guide rollers as pairs and sheaves individually. If the lift is a heavy-duty commercial model (44000, 44030) the sheave bearing is a sealed cartridge and the whole sheave is replaced as an assembly. BendPak and Forward 4-post rollers
BendPak four-post lifts (HD-9, HDS series, HDSO series) use lighter-duty steel rollers on some storage models and heavier bronze-bushed rollers on the commercial HDS lifts. BendPak sells them as OEM parts and there are direct-fit aftermarket replacements. Forward four-post lifts use rollers close in geometry to Rotary; they are Forward-branded and should be ordered by Forward model. Cable sheaves and why they matter
A worn sheave is the number-one reason a four-post lift stops running true, and a sheave with a rope-scored groove will chew a new equalizer cable in weeks. Any 4 post lift roller replacement should include a hard look at every cable sheave — top of each column and end of each runway — and any sheave with a wire-scored groove, cracked flange, or growly bearing gets replaced. DIY steps
A capable mechanic can replace guide rollers and sheaves on a four-post lift in three to five hours. Lower the lift, block the runways so they cannot move, disconnect and pull the equalizer cables (mark orientation), unbolt one column top cap, drift out the sheave pin, swap the sheave. For guide rollers, remove the runway end cap, drift out the roller pin, install the new roller and pin, grease the fitting. Reinstall cables, retension per spec, cycle the lift several times and check for even runway travel at every height. Never bypass a lock cycle during test — every trip up should sit on the safeties before you condemn or celebrate the fix.
Root causes and ordering the right parts
If a lift eats rollers in less than five years, look upstream. Common causes: cables out of equal tension pulling one corner faster than the others, a bent column shifting roller contact, or a runway that was originally installed out of plumb.
