This four post storage lift guide comes out of a question we get almost every week at our shop in Ames: “Can I stack two cars in my garage without tearing anything up?” Usually the answer is yes, but the details matter more than most people expect. We install, service, and stock parts for these lifts all over Iowa — from pole barns outside Boone to attached three-car garages in West Des Moines suburbs — and the difference between a setup that works beautifully for fifteen years and one that becomes an expensive shelf comes down to a handful of measurements and decisions made before the crate ever ships. Here’s what we walk homeowners through, in the same order we’d cover it on the phone.

Start With Ceiling Height, Not Capacity

Almost everyone starts by asking how many pounds the lift holds. We start by asking how tall the garage is, because that number is the one you can’t change. To park two vehicles vertically you need the height of the bottom car, plus the runway and crossbeam structure, plus the height of the top car, plus a few inches of breathing room so nobody scrapes a roof rack on a truss. A typical sedan on the bottom and a sedan on top works in a nine-foot ceiling with a low-profile model. Put a full-size pickup on top and you’re realistically looking at eleven to twelve feet of clear height, and that clear height has to be measured to the lowest obstruction — garage door track, opener rail, light fixture, water line, not the peak of the drywall.

We ask homeowners to measure three places: the lowest point in the parking bay, the height at the door opening, and the height where the lift columns will actually stand. Those numbers are often different by six or eight inches. If the opener rail is the problem, a high-lift door conversion or a jackshaft opener frees up real space and costs a fraction of what re-roofing does. If the ceiling simply isn’t there, we’d rather tell you that on the first call than sell you equipment that doesn’t fit. This is the single most common reason a storage lift purchase goes sideways, and it’s completely preventable with a tape measure.

Concrete: The Part Nobody Photographs

A four-post storage lift spreads its load across four base plates, which is why it’s more forgiving of imperfect concrete than a two-post. That does not mean any slab will do. We want to see at least four inches of concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, cured, reasonably level, and free of major cracking under the column footprints. A lot of Iowa garages built in the 1960s and 70s were poured thin, sometimes over questionable fill, and we’ve cored slabs that turned out to be two and a half inches over sand. On those we either recommend pouring pads under each column location or, in some cases, a caster kit so the lift’s load stays distributed and mobile.

Level matters more than people think. A slab with an inch of drain slope across the lift footprint will still work, but you’ll want shims under the low columns so the runways sit true and the vehicle doesn’t want to roll. We carry shim packs and we use them on most installs — a garage floor that looks flat to the eye rarely is. Anchoring is a separate conversation: many four-post models are freestanding by design and don’t require anchors, which is part of why they’re popular with renters and people who move. If you plan to leave it in one place permanently and you have good concrete, we generally anchor anyway. It costs almost nothing and it removes any question about walking or shifting.

Capacity, Wheelbase, and Actually Fitting Your Vehicles

Capacity is straightforward once ceiling height is settled. An 8,000 lb model handles nearly every car, crossover, and half-ton pickup on the road. Step to 9,000 or 10,000 lb if you’re storing a three-quarter-ton, a diesel, a van, or a classic with a heavy iron drivetrain. We tell people to add margin rather than shave it — the price difference between capacity tiers is smaller than the cost of regretting it, and heavier lifts usually come with wider, longer runways too.

Runway length and width is where the real fitment questions live. A short-wheelbase sports car needs runways close enough together that the tires sit properly, while a crew-cab long-bed needs enough runway length that the rear tires aren’t hanging off the approach ramps. Check the vehicle’s wheelbase against the lift’s rated minimum and maximum, and check overall length against the lift’s total footprint plus the ramp overhang. We’ve had customers order a lift that fit the car perfectly and then discover the ramps pushed the whole assembly two feet past where the garage door closes. Accessories That Earn Their Keep — And Ones That Don’t

The accessory list on a four-post can get long. In our experience three items are worth buying with the lift almost every time. Caster kits let you roll the whole unit out of the way, reposition it seasonally, or move it to a new house — for a home garage this is the single most useful add-on. Drip trays keep the bottom vehicle clean when the top one weeps oil or coolant, which it will eventually. And a jack tray with a rolling bridge jack turns a storage lift into a service lift, letting you get wheels off the ground for brakes, tires, and suspension work without a second piece of equipment.

Things we’re less enthusiastic about: extended-length ramps you don’t actually need, elaborate lighting kits that a couple of shop lights handle better and cheaper, and aftermarket accessories not matched to your specific model. Fitment on trays and bridges is model-specific, and a bargain part that doesn’t seat correctly is worse than no part. What Installation Day Actually Looks Like

A four-post storage lift typically arrives on a freight truck, banded to a pallet, weighing somewhere between fifteen hundred and twenty-five hundred pounds. That freight delivery is the first hurdle for a lot of homeowners — most residential deliveries are curbside, and a liftgate doesn’t help you move a crate up a sloped driveway. When we handle the install, we bring the equipment in, uncrate it, set the columns, level and shim, route the hydraulic lines, wire the power unit, cycle it, and adjust the safety locks so all four corners engage together. Start to finish it’s usually most of a day for two people.

If you’re going the DIY route, budget more time than the manual suggests and line up help. Standing columns and setting crossbeams is genuinely a multi-person job, and the hydraulic bleed plus lock synchronization is the step people rush and regret. Power requirements catch folks too — most units want a dedicated 220V circuit, though some run on 110V, and running that circuit is often the longest-lead-time item in the whole project. Get the electrician scheduled before the lift ships. We’ve done plenty of installs where the equipment sat in the driveway for three weeks waiting on a breaker.

Living With It: Maintenance and Safety Habits

The good news is that these lifts ask very little of you. Cables and sheaves want a periodic visual inspection and light lubrication. Hydraulic fluid level gets checked seasonally, more often the first year. The safety locks should be listened to every single cycle — you want to hear all four click, and if one lags, stop and find out why before you park a car overhead. Cable tension drifts over time and equalizing it is a ten-minute job that prevents uneven runway height and premature sheave wear. Habits matter as much as maintenance. Always lower onto the mechanical locks rather than leaving the load on hydraulics. Never work under a raised vehicle that’s resting on hydraulic pressure alone. Chock the wheels on the top deck. Keep the area under the lift clear so nothing gets crushed if a car has to come down in a hurry. And in an unheated Iowa garage, expect the power unit to be slow and grumpy at ten below — that’s normal, cycle it a couple times to warm the fluid before asking it to lift. Cold-weather sluggishness is not usually a failing pump; it’s thick oil.

Budgeting Honestly and Getting Help

The lift itself is the biggest line. Freight to central Iowa is a real number and worth asking about upfront. Accessories — casters, trays, jack bridge — commonly add fifteen to twenty-five percent. Electrical work for a dedicated circuit is separate and varies with panel location. Professional installation is the last piece, and for a four-post it’s typically the smallest of these costs relative to what it saves you in aggravation.

Where people overspend is buying more lift than their ceiling can use, or buying the cheapest available unit and then replacing cables and a power unit inside five years. Where people underspend is skipping the caster kit and the drip tray, then buying both later at full price plus shipping.
