Every week somebody calls us with the same question, and this 4 post lift weight capacity guide exists to answer it before you spend money you can’t get back. The question sounds simple: “How many pounds do I need?” The honest answer is that the number stamped on the nameplate is only one of about five things that decide whether a drive-on lift is right for your shop, your garage, or your fleet bay. Start With GVWR, Not Curb Weight

The single most common sizing mistake we see is using curb weight. Curb weight is what the vehicle weighs empty at the factory — no fuel, no passengers, no toolboxes, no ballast, no upfit. That’s not what rolls onto your runways. Gross vehicle weight rating is the number the manufacturer says the loaded vehicle can legally weigh, and that’s the number we plan around, because sooner or later somebody drives up with a full tank, a bed full of tools, and a topper.

Real Iowa examples: a half-ton crew cab pickup with a diesel option and a service body can clear 8,000 lb loaded without anybody noticing. A three-quarter-ton with a plow package and a fuel transfer tank in the bed is knocking on 10,000. A Class 4 flatbed running a small fleet is 14,000 to 19,500 GVWR. We had a rural repair shop in central Iowa buy a 9,000 lb drive-on unit because their heaviest “regular” truck was 7,400 lb — then a customer showed up with a loaded one-ton dually and they were done for the day. The whole point of a 4 post lift weight capacity guide is to keep you from that phone call. Take your heaviest realistic vehicle at GVWR, then add margin. We recommend 25 to 30 percent headroom above your worst-case load, not 5 percent.

The Capacity Tiers That Actually Exist

Drive-on lifts don’t come in infinite sizes. They cluster into tiers, and knowing the tiers keeps the conversation short. At 7,000 to 8,000 lb you’re in home storage and light-duty territory — perfect for stacking a car over a car, handling sedans, crossovers, and most half-ton pickups unloaded. At 9,000 to 12,000 lb you’re in the general service and prosumer band, which covers virtually every light truck and SUV that comes through an independent shop.

From 14,000 to 18,000 lb you’re into serious commercial and alignment work — this is where dealership service departments and fleet operations tend to land, and where you’ll find the long runways with rolling jack tray provisions. Above that, 25,000 to 40,000 lb runs medium and heavy-duty: box trucks, ambulances, buses, ag equipment haulers. Prices climb steeply between tiers, and the temptation is always to buy one tier down. Don’t. The cost difference between a 12,000 and a 14,000 lb model is far smaller than the cost of replacing an undersized lift in three years, and resale on the bigger unit is better too. Capacity Is Per Lift, Not Per Runway

Here’s a distinction that trips up a lot of first-time buyers, and it belongs in any honest 4 post lift weight capacity guide: the rated capacity is the total load the entire lift will carry, not the load per runway or per post. A 12,000 lb drive-on lift does not carry 12,000 lb on each side. It carries 12,000 lb total, distributed across four posts and two runways.

Distribution matters too. Manufacturers publish a maximum front-axle and rear-axle load — often something like 60/40 or 70/30 of total capacity. A cab-over box truck or a front-engine motorhome puts an unusual share of its weight on one axle, and you can exceed the axle limit while staying under total capacity. We’ve inspected units where the runway had a visible bow at midspan because somebody parked a heavily front-loaded vehicle in the same spot for years. Read the axle spec, not just the headline number. And if you’re using rolling bridge jacks to get wheels free, remember those jacks have their own separate ratings — typically 4,000 to 9,000 lb each — and the jack rating, not the lift rating, becomes your limit the moment the wheels leave the runway.

Runway Length, Width, and Wheelbase

Capacity is only half of fit. A 14,000 lb lift with 158-inch runways won’t safely hold a 172-inch-wheelbase dually, no matter what the placard says. Overhang beyond the runway ends changes the load geometry and puts stress the engineering never accounted for. We size runway length to the longest wheelbase you’ll service plus reasonable overhang, and runway width to the widest track.

Iowa shops running ag service trucks and extended-cab duallies routinely need open-front or extended-length configurations. Home users usually go the other way — they want the shortest overall footprint that still fits both vehicles, because garage depth is the constraint. Measure your bay before you shop: overall length, overall width, ceiling height, and the location of every door track, light fixture, and truss. Then measure again. Concrete, Anchoring, and the Floor Under It All

A drive-on lift spreads load across four base plates instead of concentrating it into two, which is exactly why so many home garages can host one. But “lower point load” is not “no requirement.” Most manufacturers specify a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength — commonly 4 inches at 3,000 PSI for lighter units, stepping up to 6 inches or more with higher-strength concrete as capacity climbs into commercial territory.

In Iowa we deal with a lot of older residential slabs poured over questionable base, plus frost heave that cracks and tilts panels over decades. We core-test when there’s any doubt. A slab that’s technically 4 inches but sitting on soft fill will settle unevenly under a loaded lift, and an out-of-level drive-on unit binds its cables and wears its slider blocks fast. Freestanding models don’t require anchors in every jurisdiction, but we anchor almost everything anyway — it costs very little and it eliminates the walk-and-creep that happens over years of drive-on, drive-off cycles. If your floor won’t support the tier you need, tell us early. Sawcutting and pouring a proper footing pad is a normal, budgetable part of the job, not a deal-breaker.

Storage Duty vs. Service Duty

Two customers can buy the same 9,000 lb lift and put wildly different demands on it. The home user who parks a classic over a daily driver cycles the lift maybe 200 times a year and lets it sit loaded for weeks. The shop that uses it for oil changes and tire work cycles it 20 times a day, every day, with the load going up and down constantly.

Those duty cycles stress different parts. Storage duty is hard on cables and locks — a lift that sits loaded at height for long stretches puts sustained tension on the cable set and keeps the safety locks engaged under load. Service duty is hard on the power unit, the hydraulic seals, and the cable sheaves, which see thousands more cycles of movement. When we spec a lift, we ask how it’ll be used, not just what it’ll hold. A commercial-duty unit at the same nominal rating typically gets heavier cables, better sheave bearings, and a power unit built for continuous work. How We Size a Lift Over the Phone
