An RV and trailer service shop near Cedar Rapids called us last year with a familiar problem: they needed a 4 post storage car lift to free up alignment bay space, but their garage build-out wasn’t finished yet, and they weren’t sure how to sequence the lift install around concrete work, electrical, and door clearance. A year later, that shop is a good case study for anyone weighing the same decision. This article walks through what actually happened from the first phone call to their first real alignment job with the lift in daily use — the sequencing decisions, the surprises, and what we’d tell any Cedar Rapids shop owner considering the same setup before they sign off on a garage build-out plan.

The Problem: An Alignment Bay Doubling as Storage

RV and trailer shops have a layout headache that most passenger-car repair shops never deal with: long wheelbases and wide trailers eat bay space fast, and there’s rarely a spare stall to dedicate purely to storage. This shop’s alignment bay was also functioning as an overflow parking spot for trailers waiting on parts, which meant the alignment rack sat idle more often than it should have because there was a trailer parked in front of it.

The fix they landed on was a 4 post storage car lift positioned to the side of the alignment bay, tall enough to park a trailer or smaller vehicle overhead while leaving the alignment rack itself clear for daily work. This is a common pattern we see — the storage lift isn’t replacing the alignment equipment, it’s protecting it from being blocked. Once we understood that the real goal was keeping the alignment rack accessible every single day, the rest of the layout decisions got much easier to make, because we were designing around workflow protection rather than just adding storage for its own sake.

Sequencing the Garage Build-Out Around the Lift Install

This shop was mid-build-out when they called — concrete was down but electrical rough-in wasn’t finished, and the overhead door position hadn’t been finalized. We’ve learned the hard way that a 4 post storage car lift needs to be locked into the plan before electrical and door decisions get finalized, not after, because ceiling height and column placement affect where conduit runs and door tracks can go.

We had them hold off on finalizing door header height until we confirmed lift height at full rise plus vehicle clearance, which saved them from a costly redo. Electrical for lift controls got roughed in during the same phase as their compressor lines, which meant no extra trenching later. If you’re mid build-out and considering a storage lift, the sequencing lesson is simple: get the lift spec’d and the pad location marked before you lock in anything overhead or in the walls near that bay. Retrofitting conduit or moving a door header after the fact costs far more than building it in from the start.

Concrete, Anchoring, and the Floor They Actually Had

Like a lot of shops built in stages, this one had standard 4-inch concrete in the bay where the lift was going, not the 6-inch reinforced slab you’d spec for a heavy-duty install from scratch. This mattered for anchor selection and for the weight rating we recommended. We didn’t want to promise a rating the floor couldn’t safely support long-term, so we walked them through anchor testing before finalizing anything.

The good news for most Cedar Rapids-area shops in a similar spot is that 4-inch standard concrete can absolutely support a 4 post storage car lift in the 8,000 to 9,000 lb range, as long as anchor spacing and floor condition check out during a pull test. We did that test before ordering the lift, not after, because there’s no fixing a floor problem once posts are bolted down and a trailer is parked on the deck. For shops still pouring concrete during their build-out, our advice is always to spec 6 inches with rebar if a storage lift is anywhere in the future plan — it gives you rating flexibility you don’t get with a thinner standard pour.

The Install Day and What Surprised Them

Install took less time than the shop expected — most of the actual bolt-down and alignment of the four posts happened in a single day once the pad was confirmed clean and the anchors were tested. What surprised them was how much of the schedule was actually about coordination: making sure the bay was clear of trailers, making sure electrical rough-in for the lift controls was already run, and making sure the delivery truck had a clear path to unload.

The other surprise was runway width. They’d pictured a standard car-width deck and hadn’t fully accounted for how a slightly wider runway configuration would change their walking clearance on one side of the bay. We caught this during the pre-install walkthrough and adjusted the mounting position a few inches to keep a full walking aisle open, which mattered once the shop started actually moving trailers and tools through that bay daily. It’s a small detail, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that’s cheap to fix before bolts go in and expensive to fix after.

First Alignment Job With the Lift in Daily Use

The real test came a few weeks after install, on a job that needed the alignment rack clear while a trailer sat parked overhead on the 4 post storage car lift. The shop ran the alignment on a passenger vehicle beneath the stored trailer without any interference — full headroom, full working clearance, and no need to move the stored unit out of the way first. That was the entire point of the layout, and it worked exactly as planned.

Since then, the shop has used the setup for a mix of storage and light service, occasionally lowering the deck partway to check tire wear on the stored vehicle using the rolling jack accessory they added at install. They told us the biggest change wasn’t dramatic — it was just not having to shuffle vehicles first thing every morning before the alignment bay was usable. That daily friction disappearing is, in our experience, the most common reason Cedar Rapids shops end up glad they made the investment.

One Year Later: Maintenance, Wear, and What They’d Do Differently

A year of near-daily use on a 4 post storage car lift in a commercial shop is a real stress test, and this one has held up with normal maintenance — periodic cable and hydraulic checks, lubrication of moving parts, and a visual inspection of anchor bolts every few months. Nothing unusual has come up, which tracks with what we’d expect from a properly rated lift installed on a tested floor.

If they’d do anything differently, it’s spec’ing the wider runway configuration from day one instead of adjusting during the walkthrough, and running electrical for a second set of lift controls on the far side of the bay in case they ever add a second unit. Their advice to other Cedar Rapids shops going through a similar garage build-out: lock in your lift spec before you finalize anything overhead or in the walls, get a real floor test before you commit to a weight rating, and think through your daily workflow — not just your storage need — before you decide exactly where the posts go.
