A symmetric 4 post storage car lift has runways centered directly under the vehicle, meaning the front and rear axle weight distributes evenly across both sides regardless of what you drive onto it. This matters more than people expect when you’re storing a mixed fleet: one week it’s a low sports car, the next it’s a full-size pickup trade-in. Symmetric decks don’t care about wheelbase or drivetrain layout, so you’re not recalculating your approach every time a different vehicle rolls in. The tradeoff is door clearance. Because the columns sit at the true corners of the runway rather than offset toward the front, symmetric designs can make it tighter to open doors fully once the vehicle is parked between the posts, especially in a bay under 12 feet wide. What should drive the decision is your actual vehicle mix and how often the lift needs to function as more than storage. A dealership running mostly sedans and crossovers through seasonal rotation can go either way; one that regularly stores lifted trucks or wide SUVs should lean symmetric for the extra door and mirror clearance those vehicles demand.
