An independent pro shop owner in West Des Moines called us trying to decide between two safety configurations for a new 4-post storage lift he wanted to use for alignment work: manual arm restraints or an automatic safety-cam engagement system. It’s a question we get constantly, because most shops assume all 4-post lifts lock the same way, and they don’t. The restraint system you choose affects how fast your techs can turn cars, how much manual attention each lift requires, and how confident you can be that a car isn’t going to shift mid-alignment. Configuration One: Manual Arm Restraints

The traditional setup on a 4-post storage lift uses manual arm restraints — mechanical locks the operator engages by hand once the vehicle is positioned and centered on the runways. They’re simple, reliable, and have been the standard for decades because there’s very little to go wrong mechanically. For a West Des Moines shop running a mix of alignment work and general storage, manual restraints are often the lower-cost option, and they hold up well over years of daily use without much maintenance.

The tradeoff is operator discipline. Manual restraints only work if the tech actually engages them every time, and in a busy alignment bay where cars are cycling through quickly, that step can get rushed or skipped under pressure. We’ve serviced 4-post storage lifts where the restraint pins were worn smooth from being forced into position instead of properly aligned first — a sign that shop workflow was fighting the restraint system rather than working with it. For lower-volume shops or ones where the same one or two techs run every alignment, manual restraints are a proven, cost-effective choice.

Configuration Two: Automatic Safety-Cam Engagement

The other configuration uses an automatic safety-cam system that engages as the lift rises, locking in at preset height increments without the operator doing anything extra. This is increasingly common on newer 4-post storage lift models built for alignment-focused shops, because it removes the human-error variable entirely. The lift can’t be raised without the cams tracking upward with it, and there’s no separate step a rushed tech might forget.

For the West Des Moines shop owner we spoke with, this mattered because his bay runs high volume — multiple alignments a day, often with newer techs rotating through. An automatic safety-cam system meant one less thing to train for and one less way for a shortcut to become a safety issue. The tradeoff is cost: safety-cam equipped models typically run higher upfront than manual-restraint equivalents, and if something in the cam mechanism needs service, it’s a more involved repair than swapping a worn restraint pin. For high-volume alignment shops, though, most owners we work with decide the extra cost is worth the reduced risk.

What Alignment Work Specifically Demands

Alignment work puts different demands on a 4-post storage lift than straight storage or even general suspension service. The vehicle needs to sit dead level, the runways need accurate turnplates and slip plates built in, and the restraint system — whichever type you choose — needs to hold that position steady while a tech is adjusting tie rods and cross-tolerance is measured in fractions of a degree. Any play in the restraint system translates directly into inaccurate readings and a comeback.

This is why we always ask alignment-focused shops what type of runway and turnplate package they want before we even get to the arm restraint conversation. A 4-post storage lift set up for alignment needs turnplates at the front and often slip plates at the rear, both of which interact with whichever restraint system is holding the vehicle. Get the runway package wrong and even a perfectly engaged safety-cam system won’t save you from bad alignment numbers.

Real Shop Scenarios: When Each Setup Makes Sense

We’ve installed both configurations across central Iowa and the pattern is fairly consistent. Independent shops doing a moderate volume of alignments alongside general repair work, tire service, and storage tend to do fine with manual arm restraints on their 4-post storage lift — the cost savings matter more than the marginal convenience, and a stable, experienced crew doesn’t need the extra safety net. We’ve set this up for shops running one or two lifts where the owner personally trains every new hire on restraint procedure.

On the other hand, shops that are scaling fast, bringing on techs at various experience levels, or running alignment as a primary profit center tend to lean toward safety-cam engagement. The West Des Moines shop fell into this second category — enough volume and enough staff turnover that removing a manual step from the process was worth the added equipment cost. Capacity and Runway Length Still Come First

Before arm restraints even enter the conversation, the 4-post storage lift has to be rated and sized correctly for what you’re lifting. Alignment shops working on a mix of passenger cars and heavier trucks or SUVs should size up rather than down — a lift rated for 9,000 to 12,000 pounds gives you headroom for today’s heavier vehicles without redoing the purchase decision in a few years. We see this come up constantly in quotes across Iowa, where shops undersized their first lift and regretted it once truck and SUV volume increased.

Runway length matters too, especially for alignment work involving longer wheelbase vehicles. Standard runways handle most passenger cars and crossovers fine, but if your shop regularly aligns extended-cab trucks or vans, confirm runway length before finalizing either restraint configuration. It’s a detail that’s easy to overlook when the conversation is focused on arm restraints and safety cams, but it affects whether the vehicle even fits securely on the platform in the first place.

Installation and Calibration Details That Affect Safety

Whichever restraint configuration you choose, the safety of the system comes down to correct installation and calibration, not just the equipment spec sheet. A 4-post storage lift with automatic safety-cam engagement still needs the cam tracks installed square and level, or the cams can bind or fail to engage evenly on both sides. Manual arm restraints need the same attention — restraint pins and receiving holes have to align cleanly across the full range of lift height, or techs will find themselves forcing the mechanism, which is exactly the wear pattern we mentioned earlier.
