Most people come to us thinking they want a 2-post lift because that’s what they’ve seen in every shop they’ve ever visited. But once we start asking about their slab, a lot of them end up with a 4-post storage lift instead. A 2-post lift concentrates enormous point loads on just two footings, and most residential slabs poured at 4 inches simply aren’t rated for that. A 4-post storage lift spreads the load across four columns and a full-length runway, which is far more forgiving on standard garage concrete.
There’s also the storage angle itself, which is the whole point of the purchase for a lot of first-time buyers. A 2-post lift is built for working underneath a vehicle, full stop. A 4-post storage lift lets you drive a car up onto the runways and park it there indefinitely, freeing up floor space below or beside it for a second vehicle, a workbench, or a snowblower. If your goal is fitting a Camaro, a Jeep, or a daily driver into a garage that’s a little tight, this is usually the better fit before you even get into cost or concrete thickness.
Weight Ratings: Don’t Just Buy the Cheapest One

The mistake first-time buyers make is assuming their car’s curb weight is the only number that matters. You also need to think about what else might end up on that lift over the years — a future truck purchase, a trailer you tow, or simply the safety margin you want built in.
Our advice for a first-time home garage buy is to round up. If your vehicle sits around 6,500 lb, don’t buy the exact 7,000 lb model just to save a little money — step up to the 9,000 lb rating if it’s close in price. A 4-post storage lift is a long-term purchase, and most owners keep theirs for well over a decade. Buying more capacity than you think you need today costs less in the long run than replacing an undersized unit in five years.
Freight, Unloading, and the Forklift Question
This is the part first-time buyers almost never think about until the truck is in their driveway. A 4-post storage lift ships as several thousand pounds of steel on a flatbed or straight truck, usually banded onto pallets. Standard freight delivery is curbside — the driver is not obligated to carry pieces into your garage, and most won’t. Ceiling Height, Bay Width, and Fitting the Lift to Your Space
Before you buy, measure twice. Ceiling height determines whether a vehicle parked on top of the lift will actually clear your rafters or garage door track, and this trips up more first-time buyers than any other spec. A 4-post storage lift with the vehicle raised to full height typically needs 12 feet of clearance or more depending on the model and the vehicle, so a garage with 11-foot walls may limit how high you can safely park.

We still want to know slab thickness, whether it’s reinforced with rebar or wire mesh, and whether you have in-floor heat, because anchor placement has to avoid heat lines. Four inches of standard concrete is generally fine for a residential-weight 4-post unit; if you’re at six inches with rebar, you have even more margin, especially for higher-capacity models in the 9,000 lb-plus range.
