Why an RV shop chose a 4-post storage lift over a two-post

This particular shop services fifth-wheels, travel trailers, and Class A motorhomes, and the owner told us flat out he didn’t want to fight with adapters or lift points on a two-post every time a customer rolled in with a 38-foot rig. What a proper cable inspection actually involves

When we came back out for the first real service call, we didn’t just glance at the cables — we ran the platform to several heights and inspected each cable’s full length for fraying, flat spots, rust bloom, and uneven strand wear, paying close attention to where the cable wraps the sheave, since that’s where bend fatigue shows up first. We also checked cable tension and end-fitting condition, because a swaged fitting that’s started to slip is a bigger red flag than surface rust ever is.

On this lift, we found normal wear consistent with six months of heavy daily cycling — no fraying yet, but tension that had drifted enough to need adjustment on two of the four cables. We reset tension, greased the sheaves, and gave the shop a realistic timeline for when to expect actual cable replacement rather than adjustment.
