A shop restoring classic muscle cars and Jeeps doesn’t need the same rating as a shop pulling in one-ton dually project trucks. Most home and small-shop applications land comfortably on a 9,000 to 10,000 lb rated 4-post storage lift, which covers everything from a Camaro to a heavier truck with room to spare. If your restoration work regularly includes 3/4-ton or larger diesel trucks, size up — we’ve seen shops try to save money on a 7,000 lb unit and regret it the first time a customer’s diesel rolls in.

Don’t guess at this number. Add up the actual curb weight of the heaviest vehicle you expect to store or service, then build in margin, because unevenly loaded vehicles and add-on toolboxes or plows push real-world weight higher than spec sheets suggest.

Engine Oil Pan Gasket Work Changes the Math

If part of your restoration business includes engine oil pan gasket work, transmission service, or anything that requires getting under a raised vehicle regularly, your decision tree needs an extra branch for rolling jacks and slip plates. A pure storage-only 4-post lift with no jack tray is fine for parking cars between projects, but the moment you need to drop a pan or service a differential while the car sits elevated, you want a lift built to accept a rolling bridge jack between the runways. That accessory lets a technician roll a jack down the length of the platform and lift the wheels off the runway surface to pull them for brake or suspension work.

We tell every restoration shop the same thing: buy the jack tray capability even if you don’t order the jack on day one. Retrofitting a 4-post storage lift for a rolling jack after the fact is far more expensive than speccing it correctly when you order. Casters and Mobility for Multi-Project Shops

A lot of restoration shops in east-central Iowa run multiple projects through the same bay space over a year and want the option to reposition equipment. Caster kits let you roll a 4-post storage lift out of the way when a bay needs to be cleared for a bigger job, then roll it back into place once you’re ready to store the next project car. Baseplate and overhead 4-post units both distribute weight across a footprint rather than through four small anchor points like a two-post lift, which is good news, but you still need to know your slab thickness and rebar situation before finalizing anything. Four to six inches of reinforced concrete is typically fine for most 4-post ratings, but always confirm with the manufacturer’s anchor spec for the specific weight class you’re ordering.

But that gap narrows or disappears once you factor in the cost of any ceiling modification an overhead unit might require in a tighter shop. A restoration shop with borderline ceiling height sometimes ends up paying more overall for overhead once they add the crossbeam clearance work, versus just ordering baseplate from the start.
