Reading the Weight Numbers Correctly for a Lifted Off-Road Rig

Off-road and overland trucks lie about their own weight. A 4-post storage lift raises the vehicle on its wheels, which means the wheels themselves are still bearing load unless you add a rolling bridge jack or jack tray between the runways. For a builder doing regular tire rotations, that accessory isn’t optional — it’s the only way to get a wheel off the ground safely. We spec these in with nearly every off-road-focused 4-post storage lift we install, because the alternative is trying to jack a corner with a floor jack balanced on a runway, which is how people get hurt.

The bridge jack rides in a channel between the front and rear runways and lifts independently once the main platform and safety cams are locked. That sequencing matters: cams engage first, platform is secure, then the bridge jack raises the corner needed for wheel work. We walk every customer through that order during commissioning rather than assuming it’s intuitive, because it isn’t the first time you do it.

Comparing 4-Post Storage Lifts to Alignment and Service-Rated Platforms

Some builders ask whether they should just buy an alignment-rated 4-post instead of a straight storage unit, especially once bolt-on alignment kits come up in conversation. We’ve fielded that exact question from shops planning to add an alignment kit down the road rather than paying for it up front. The honest answer: a storage-focused 4-post storage lift and an alignment-ready platform share a similar footprint, but the alignment version needs slip plates, turn tables, and a rear slip plate arrangement built into the deck from day one. Retrofitting later is possible on some models but not all, so it’s worth deciding before the unit ships rather than after.
