If a 4-post storage lift is purely for parking, you don’t need much beyond a solid platform and a way to drive on and off. The second you plan to change oil, pull a transmission pan, or bleed brakes underneath it, the lift needs to hold that position reliably while a person’s head and arms are in the danger zone. That’s a different engineering conversation than storage alone, and it’s why we always ask what the lift will actually be used for before quoting a configuration.

The mechanical locks — usually a ratcheting safety-cam or a mechanical latch system — are what keep the platform from dropping if hydraulic pressure is lost. On a storage-only unit, you might rarely engage them because the car just sits. On a service unit, you’re engaging and disengaging that lock every time you lower or raise the lift for a fluid change, so the mechanism needs to be smooth, easy to reach, and reliable after a few thousand cycles. We spec heavier-duty cam engagement on any four-post going into a shop where oil service is a regular task, not an occasional one, because the wear pattern is completely different from a lift that goes up once and sits for a month.

Arm Restraints and Safety-Cam Engagement Explained

Because a 4-post storage lift is a runway-style platform, not a frame-engaging two-post, there’s no swing arm to restrain in the way people usually mean with two-post lifts. What matters here is a different kind of restraint: the safety catches or locks along each post that mechanically hold the platform at height, independent of the hydraulic cylinder. These are what you’re relying on the moment you roll a creeper underneath to drain oil or pull a driveshaft.

Good safety-cam engagement should be positive and audible — you should hear and feel it lock, not guess. Cheaper units sometimes have sloppy cam engagement that requires jiggling the lift to seat properly, which is exactly the wrong thing to discover with your torso under a car. If you’re doing regular service — oil, brakes, exhaust work — you want the rolling jack accessory and a platform height that gives comfortable clearance for a creeper, plus a drain-friendly deck if that’s offered. The last branch is space: a fixed four-post needs a dedicated footprint, while caster-equipped units let you reposition the lift as your shop layout changes, which matters if you’re not 100% sure of your final floor plan yet. Ramp Style and Runway Length for Real Service Work

For oil changes specifically, the jack accessory isn’t strictly necessary since you’re working underneath rather than at the wheels, but it’s worth budgeting for if brake or tire service is anywhere in your plans, because retrofitting a runway for one later is more expensive than speccing it at purchase. Concrete and Anchoring Considerations for Service Use

Storage-only four-post lifts get a pass on some anchoring rigor because the load is mostly static. We ask about concrete thickness and condition on every quote for exactly this reason.

Four to six inches of solid, uncracked concrete is typically fine for anchoring a four-post used for both storage and service, but older or thinner slabs, or floors with infloor heat and rebar, need a closer look before we commit to a bolt pattern. We’ve had Iowa customers with in-floor heat ask us to plan anchor locations carefully around the tubing, which is a five-minute conversation that saves a very expensive mistake. We verify the hydraulic system holds pressure without drift over several minutes, since a slow leak is exactly the kind of thing that erodes trust in the safety locks over time. We check that ramp and runway surfaces are properly torqued and that any jack accessory, if included, seats and locks correctly in its track.

We also walk the customer through the actual sequence they’ll use for service — raise, engage lock, verify lock, then work underneath — because a lift is only as safe as the habits of the person using it.
