A baseplate configuration skips the overhead steel and relies on a bolted base connecting all four posts, which is the better call when you’ve got a low ceiling or you don’t want steel crossing your sightline. Both hold a vehicle the same way, but they change how the lift behaves and how it fits your building.

For seasonal storage specifically — parking a car up top all winter so you can work on something else underneath, or double-stacking a daily driver and a project — the overhead version generally locks in more rigidity and is our default recommendation when ceiling height allows it. If your garage has exposed rafters or a lower roofline, though, the baseplate design keeps everything low-profile and still gives you a stable 4-post storage lift without fighting your building’s height.
