A 4-post storage lift showed up on our schedule a few months back for a mobile mechanic working out of a shop in the Des Moines metro who needed more floor space without giving up the ability to actually work on a vehicle. He runs transmission service jobs out of a garage that also doubles as parking for his own daily drivers, and he was tired of shuffling cars around every time a customer’s truck needed a driveline dropped. Why This Des Moines Shop Needed a 4-Post Storage Lift

The shop owner does a lot of transmission work — pulling pans, dropping transfer cases, servicing driveline components on trucks and SUVs that come through the door. The problem wasn’t lack of ability to lift a vehicle. He already had a two-post in the main bay. The problem was storage. Customer vehicles waiting on parts, his own project trucks, and finished jobs were all competing for the same square footage, and every time he needed to move something it cost him fifteen or twenty minutes of shuffling.

A 4-post storage lift solved two problems at once. It gave him a place to park a vehicle up in the air, completely out of the way, freeing up the slab underneath for another car or a workbench. And because he does transmission and driveline work, we spec’d a unit with a full-length runway rather than a low-profile parking lift, so he can still roll a jack underneath and drop a transmission on a stored vehicle without unloading it first. Comparing Model Numbers: What We Actually Quoted

We walked him through three options before landing on a final spec. The first was a Rotary SM12 series unit rated in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range, with a standard 12-foot runway. The second was a Challenger CL10, similar capacity but slightly different overhead clearance requirements, which mattered because his building has 12-foot sidewalls and he needed the lift to fit without touching a truss. The third option was a BendPak HD-9 series for lighter-duty passenger work, which we ruled out once we confirmed he’d occasionally be storing a one-ton diesel.

The model number comparison came down to weight capacity versus ceiling height versus runway length, and every one of those numbers interacts with the others. A taller lift eats more overhead room. A longer runway needs more floor length. A higher capacity rating usually means heavier steel and a wider footprint. We measured his building, confirmed 4 inches of standard concrete was adequate for the anchor pattern at this capacity, and landed on the Challenger CL10 with a bottle jack rolling accessory so he could still lift the front or rear of a stored vehicle independently for brake or driveline work.

Weight Rating: Don’t Guess, Measure

One thing we push back on constantly is customers guessing at weight rating. A 4-post storage lift rated at 7,000 lbs is fine for daily drivers, but the moment a customer’s diesel truck, a project Jeep with steel bumpers and a winch, or a loaded van rolls in, that margin disappears fast. We always ask what the heaviest vehicle realistically parked on the lift will be, then add a buffer. For this Des Moines shop, trucks in for transmission service regularly pushed close to 8,000 lbs curb weight, so we recommended nothing under a 9,000 lb rating, and encouraged the 10,000 lb tier given how often heavier trucks rotate through.

This is where model number comparisons actually matter to a buyer instead of being a spec sheet exercise. Two lifts that look nearly identical in photos can have a 2,000 lb capacity gap because of different column steel gauge, cable size, or hydraulic cylinder bore. Runway Length and Caster Options for Working Lifts

Because this customer needed to actually service vehicles while they sat stored, runway length became a bigger decision than usual. A shorter runway saves floor space but limits which vehicles fit safely, especially longer trucks and vans common in transmission and driveline work. We measured his longest regular customer vehicle and built in extra margin rather than sizing to the average.

We also discussed caster kits, which let the whole unit be relocated across the shop floor if he ever reconfigures the layout. Casters add flexibility but aren’t meant for lifts that stay loaded and get rolled around daily — they’re for repositioning during downtime. For a shop like this one that might shift bay layout seasonally, we included a caster option so the 4-post storage lift wasn’t a permanent fixture bolted into one configuration.

Baseplate vs Overhead: A Quick Detour on Configuration

Even though this was primarily a storage-and-transmission-service job, we still walked through overhead versus baseplate configuration since ceiling height was a live concern. Baseplate models connect the columns via a floor-level beam, which is more forgiving under a lower ceiling but does create a trip hazard you drive over. Overhead models connect the columns up top, keeping the floor completely clear but requiring extra vertical clearance most home garages don’t have.

For this shop, the 12-foot sidewalls made either configuration workable, but we recommended baseplate anyway because he was already comfortable with a runway-style two-post nearby and wanted consistency in how vehicles approached each lift. The decision isn’t just about ceiling height — it’s about how the space gets used every day, and for a working shop, floor-level obstructions matter less than they would in a tight home garage.

Installation Realities for Des Moines Metro Shops

Every Des Moines metro install we do starts with a site visit or detailed photos, because concrete thickness, slab condition, and floor flatness all affect anchor performance. Standard 4-inch concrete is adequate for most mid-capacity 4-post storage lift installs, but we still run anchor pull tests before signing off. Buildings with in-floor heat or rebar closer to the surface get extra attention since we don’t want to compromise those systems while drilling.

For this shop, install day took about half a day for the frame and runway assembly, followed by hydraulic hookup and a full function test under load before we handed it off. We always run a demonstration cycle with the customer present so they understand the safety locks, lowering sequence, and any accessory operation before we leave. That’s standard for every 4-post storage lift we put in, whether it’s a one-car home garage or a working shop like this one.

What This Means for Other Iowa Shops Considering a 4-Post

The lesson from this Des Moines job applies broadly: don’t buy a 4-post storage lift based on the cheapest listing or the first spec sheet you find. Match capacity to your heaviest realistic vehicle, decide whether you need a working runway or a simple parking unit, and factor in ceiling height before you fall in love with a model number. A lift that’s perfect for a home garage storing a lightweight sedan is the wrong choice for a shop rotating trucks through transmission service every week.
