Municipal fleets carry liability that a private garage doesn’t. If a lift fails during an exhaust job or a driveline swap on a plow truck, that’s not just a bad day — it’s a workers’ comp claim and possibly a state inspection issue. We treat every fleet installation like it’s going to get audited, because eventually it will be. That means we’re not just dropping a 4-post storage lift on whatever slab happens to be open; we’re verifying it can actually hold the weight class your fleet runs, day after day, for years.

The other reason a safety-first approach matters is throughput. A fleet garage with a 4-post storage lift used correctly can run two vehicles through service in the time it used to take for one, because you can store a truck up top while working underneath another on the ground. But that only works if the columns are anchored properly and the runway spacing matches your widest vehicle. We’ve seen fleets buy a unit sized for pickups and then try to shoehorn a service van underneath it — that’s a callback waiting to happen, and it’s exactly the kind of mistake a proper walkthrough catches before the concrete gets drilled.

Ceiling Height and Clearance for Exhaust and Driveline Work

But that only works if you’ve measured ceiling height correctly, including anything hanging from it. For driveline work specifically, you also need clearance below the runway if you’re planning to use a rolling bridge jack to drop a driveshaft or transmission. That’s typically another 4-6 feet of headroom you need beyond the vehicle’s lifted height. Fleet garages built in the last couple decades often have in-floor heat, and that changes the anchoring plan completely — you can’t blindly drill into a heated slab without risking a puncture. Fleet garages that need to move vehicles in and out quickly during storm season or emergency callouts benefit from a runway oriented to match existing traffic patterns, not just wherever there’s open floor. During the walkthrough we’ll physically walk the path a truck takes from the bay door to the lift and back, because that’s the fastest way to catch a clearance problem before it becomes a permanent obstruction in a working fleet garage.

Weight Rating for Real Fleet Vehicles

Fleet vehicles run heavier than most home garage buyers expect, and undersizing a 4-post storage lift is a mistake we catch constantly during quoting. A half-ton pickup with a plow and salt spreader attached can easily push past 9,000-10,000 lbs loaded, and a lift rated for passenger cars won’t cut it. We always ask for the heaviest vehicle in the rotation, fully equipped, not the base curb weight from the manufacturer spec sheet.

This matters even more for storage-focused setups where the lift holds a vehicle for extended periods rather than just during a service window. A 4-post storage lift under sustained load needs a safety margin built in, which is why we typically recommend rounding up to the next weight class rather than buying to the exact number. If your fleet runs a mix of light service trucks and heavier plow or utility vehicles, we’ll usually spec for the heaviest unit that will ever sit on it, because retrofitting a heavier-rated lift later costs far more than buying the right one up front.

Power, Hydraulics, and Winter Operation in Western Illinois

Western Illinois winters are hard on hydraulic equipment sitting in an unheated or marginally heated fleet bay. Final Walkthrough Checklist Before You Buy
