Step 1: Know why cable inspection matters more in a transmission bay

Transmission service puts a different kind of stress on a 7000 lb car lift than a standard tire rotation or brake job. The vehicle often needs to stay elevated for extended periods, sometimes with a transmission jack working underneath while a tech pulls the unit down. That’s sustained load at height, not a quick up-and-down cycle, and sustained load exposes cable weaknesses that quick cycling might not.

For a tire-and-alignment shop that’s expanded into transmission work, this is a critical distinction. Your lift may have handled years of routine tire and alignment work without issue, but the moment you start doing extended-duration transmission jobs, you’re asking the same cables to hold steady for much longer stretches. Step 2: Visual inspection — what to actually look for

Start at one end of the cable and walk the entire length with your eyes and a flashlight, looking for broken strands, flattened sections, rust bloom, and any place where the cable diameter looks different from the rest of its length. On a 7000 lb car lift, even one or two broken strands in a load-bearing cable is a reason to stop using that lift until it’s replaced, not a reason to “keep an eye on it.”

Pay close attention to where the cable passes through pulleys and sheaves. This is where cables see the most friction and where wear accumulates fastest, but it’s also the area techs skip most often because it’s harder to see. Step 4: Set an inspection interval that matches your actual use

Manufacturer guidance for commercial lifts generally calls for cable inspection every 90 days, but that assumes moderate use. A transmission service bay that regularly holds vehicles at height for 30 minutes to an hour, multiple times a day, is putting more cumulative stress on the system than a quick-service bay. We recommend shops doing regular transmission work on a 7000 lb car lift shift to a 60-day full inspection cycle, with a quick visual check at the start of every shift.

For Iowa Great Lakes shops specifically, winter months deserve a tighter interval regardless of use pattern. Road salt corrosion works faster than most techs expect, and a cable that looked fine in October can develop concerning rust bloom by February. Step 5: Know the replacement threshold — don’t wait for total failure

You do not need total failure to justify replacement on a 7000 lb car lift — waiting for total failure means waiting for a dropped vehicle.
