Myth: Any 220V outlet will run a 7000 lb car lift

A 7000 lb car lift with a hydraulic power unit typically needs a dedicated circuit, not a shared 220V line that’s already feeding an air compressor or a parts washer. The motor draws a real inrush current when it starts, and if it’s sharing a breaker with other shop equipment, you’ll trip that breaker the first time two machines kick on at once.

We’ve walked into bays where the owner proudly points at an outlet and says “there’s your 220,” and it turns out that circuit was wired fifteen years ago for a tire changer that’s long gone, undersized for anything close to what a modern lift power unit pulls. Before we schedule an install, we ask directly what’s already on that circuit and what gauge wire feeds it. A dedicated, correctly sized circuit run by a licensed electrician is not an upsell we’re pushing — it’s the difference between a lift that runs every day without nuisance trips and one that becomes a recurring service call. Myth: Single-phase and three-phase are interchangeable

We hear this constantly on the phone, especially from smaller independent shops that haven’t dealt with commercial-grade equipment before. Most 7000 lb car lift models built for oil change and fluid service bays run fine on single-phase power, and that’s genuinely good news for a shop working out of an older building or a converted garage in a small southeast Iowa town where three-phase service was never run. But not every model is single-phase, and manufacturers don’t all default the same way.

We’ve had customers order a lift assuming it would match their existing three-phase compressor circuit, only to find the power unit is wired single-phase and needs its own separate feed entirely. The reverse happens too — a shop wires a new single-phase run, and the lift they ordered actually specs three-phase for that voltage and horsepower combination. Myth: The lift’s power unit location doesn’t matter for wiring

Where the power unit sits changes your conduit run, and shops planning for oil changes and fluid work under Euro cars often want the unit tucked out of the way near a wall, which sounds smart until you calculate the wire run distance. Voltage drop over a long run is a real thing, and if your electrician sizes the wire for a twenty-foot run but the actual path around support columns and existing conduit runs forty feet, the lift’s motor won’t get full voltage under load.

We walk this out with customers before the concrete work or conduit gets finalized. If you’re setting up a bay specifically for European fluid service — which usually means more frequent oil changes with sometimes finicky under-tray access — you want the lift positioned for technician workflow first, then we plan the electrical run to match that position rather than compromising placement for a shorter wire run. It’s a five-minute conversation that saves an electrician from having to redo a run after the fact.

Myth: Any local electrician already knows what a lift needs

A licensed electrician can absolutely pull the permit and run the wire, but most haven’t wired a 7000 lb car lift before and don’t automatically know the amperage draw, breaker size, or disconnect requirements specific to your model’s power unit. We send spec sheets ahead of install day for exactly this reason. The motor nameplate has the actual numbers — voltage, phase, amperage — and that’s what the electrician needs, not a guess based on what a similar-looking lift needed at another shop.

We ask about existing panel load before we quote installation, because a 7000 lb car lift adds real demand, and if your panel is already tight, the fix needs to happen before the lift shows up, not after a breaker starts tripping mid-oil-change.

This matters more in older buildings common around southeast Iowa’s small towns, where the panel might be original to a structure built decades before anyone imagined a shop specializing in European import service. Myth: Concrete and electrical are separate conversations

Myth: You’ll figure out the electrical during the install visit

We understand the instinct to just get the lift ordered and sort details out later, but a 7000 lb car lift install goes sideways fast when the electrical isn’t ready before our crew arrives. We’ve shown up to shops with the lift uncrated and ready to set, only to find the promised circuit was never actually run, or was run to the wrong location, or wasn’t sized to spec. The fix is simple: treat electrical readiness the same way you’d treat concrete readiness or forklift access on delivery day. Confirm the circuit is live, sized correctly, and located where the power unit will actually sit, before we schedule the crew.
