We got a call last spring from a one-bay independent shop owner in southwest Iowa who was pricing out a lift specifically for oil pan gasket jobs on half-ton trucks and mid-size SUVs, and he had two configurations in mind. One was a straightforward two-post rated at 7,000 lbs. The other was a heavier 10,000 lb unit he’d seen a competitor running. Garage build-out sequencing: concrete, power, and clearance first

Before you ever pick a capacity, sequence the build-out correctly. Concrete comes first — a 7000 lb car lift still needs a slab thickness and cure time that matches the anchor bolt pull-test requirements, and that’s not something you can retrofit cheaply after the fact. But for a one-bay independent shop built around gasket and driveability work, the two-post configuration at 7,000 lbs consistently outperforms a four-post at the same or higher capacity. We’ve had customers switch after a season of fighting runway clearance on pan jobs, and it’s a change we can usually see coming during the initial consultation.

What a bad cylinder or worn cable does to your capacity margin
