Differential fluid service doesn’t sound dramatic until you’re the one crawling under a 3/4-ton pickup with a drain pan balanced on your knee. A 7000 lb car lift gives you enough headroom over a stock 6000-lb pickup or SUV that you’re not white-knuckling the capacity plate every time a customer rolls in with a topper, a winch bumper, and a full tank of fuel. We’ve seen shops try to stretch a 6000 lb lift to cover this work and it’s fine right up until it isn’t — one heavier-than-expected trade-in truck and the arms are maxed out with zero margin.

The other reason 7000 lbs works so well for diff service specifically is arm geometry. You need to get the vehicle up far enough to work comfortably at the pumpkin, drain plug, and fill plug without stooping, and you need the arms positioned so they’re not blocking the diff cover. Most 7000 lb rated two-post and four-post models are built with that mid-size to full-size truck and SUV range in mind, which happens to be exactly the fleet mix we see across dealerships and independent shops from Ames to the Quad Cities.
