We hear the same myth every month from independent European-marque shops along the Iowa-Nebraska border: “a 9000 lb car lift is overkill for a BMW or Audi.” It isn’t. Restoration and metal work on European cars means stripped bodies, subframes on the lift arms, welding fixtures, and sometimes an engine still hanging in the bay while you work underneath. Myth #1: European Cars Are Light, So You Don’t Need a 9000 lb Car Lift

Curb weight numbers are misleading. A 3-Series or A4 might weigh under 4,000 lbs stock, but restoration work rarely involves a stock car. Shops doing metal work often have the car on the lift with the drivetrain still installed, extra fixturing bolted to the frame, and sometimes a second vehicle’s worth of parts staged on a cart hanging off the rear crossmember for balance. A 9000 lb car lift isn’t about the car’s sticker weight — it’s about margin for uneven loads, off-center lifting points, and the reality that European unibody cars have narrower, more specific lift pad zones that concentrate weight differently than a domestic truck.

We’ve serviced shops that bought a 7,000 lb lift for exactly this reason — “it’s just sedans” — and then struggled the first time they needed to lift a car with the front clip removed and a transmission jack still under it. A 9000 lb car lift, like a Rotary SPO9 or a Challenger CL10, gives you enough reserve capacity that you’re never doing math in your head before every lift. That’s the actual value: not raw tonnage, but not having to think twice.

Myth #2: All 9000 lb Two-Post Lifts Are Interchangeable

Brand history matters more than people assume. Rotary has been building two-post lifts in the U.S. since the 1940s, and their symmetric and asymmetric 9000 lb car lift models are engineered with adjustable arm geometry specifically because independent shops work on a mix of vehicle platforms — European, domestic, and everything in between. Challenger, under the PKS Industries commercial line, has its own long history building heavier-duty two-post platforms that lean toward shops running mixed fleets of cars and light trucks.

The arm reach and pad height range differ between these platforms, and for European cars with lower rocker panels and unusual pinch-weld locations, that difference is the whole game. A shop that buys a generic 9000 lb car lift without checking arm reach on a low-slung wagon or coupe will find themselves fighting the equipment on day one. We always ask what’s actually going up on the lift before recommending a specific model — brand reputation only means something when the arm geometry matches your bay.

Myth #3: Parts Support Doesn’t Matter Until Something Breaks

The parts pipeline is the part shops along the Iowa-Nebraska border overlook until they’re down a bay. Cylinder seals, cables, and safety locks wear out on every two-post lift eventually, and a 9000 lb car lift under daily restoration use — with its heavier average loads — wears those components faster than a lift babysitting oil changes. Buying from a distributor who stocks Rotary and Challenger parts locally means a seal kit ships same-week instead of sitting on backorder from an overseas manufacturer for a month.

Myth #4: Concrete Doesn’t Need to Be Checked for Heavier Lifts

A 9000 lb car lift puts real point loading on your slab, and older shop buildings along the border — especially converted barns or ag buildings repurposed for auto work — often have thinner or older concrete than a purpose-built shop. We’ve turned down installs where the existing pad simply wasn’t rated for the anchor pull-out force a 9000 lb car lift generates under full load, especially with the extra torque from off-center restoration lifts.

Before you commit to a specific model, get the slab checked. A four-inch pad poured for foot traffic and light equipment isn’t the same as a six-inch pad poured for a two-post lift. This is one of the most common reasons installs get delayed after the equipment already arrived — and it’s completely avoidable with one phone call before you order.

Myth #5: Any Installer Can Set Up a European-Focused Bay

Installing a 9000 lb car lift correctly involves more than anchoring the posts level. For European-marque shops, arm swing clearance around low front bumpers, lift pad height for staggered ride heights, and equalizer cable tension all matter more than on a typical domestic-focused bay. We’ve corrected installs from other companies where the posts were plumb and level but the arm reach didn’t clear a common European sedan’s rocker panel without a spacer block — a fix that should have been caught before the concrete was drilled.

Ask any installer bidding your job how many European-focused shops they’ve actually set up equipment for. It’s a fair question, and if they can’t answer it specifically, that’s worth knowing before you sign anything.

Myth #6: A the lift Is a “Buy It and Forget It” Purchase

Restoration and metal work shops put more hours on a lift than a typical quick-lube bay, and that means faster wear on cables, cylinder seals, and locking mechanisms. We recommend a documented inspection routine — cables, anchor bolts, hydraulic lines, and safety locks — at minimum quarterly for shops running a the lift under daily restoration use. Skipping this because “it’s a new lift” is how small problems become downtime.

We also recommend shops keep a rebuild kit on the shelf rather than order it after something fails. It’s cheap insurance for a piece of equipment your whole shop depends on.
