If you run a farm shop in northwest Iowa and you’re finally ready to add proper alignment capability, the part number a0436 has probably crossed your desk on a parts quote or lift spec sheet at some point in that process, and it’s worth understanding before you commit to a layout. We get calls every month from shop owners who bought a lift first and figured out the building second, and it almost always costs them money to fix. Why Build-Out Sequencing Matters More Than the Lift Itself

Most rural shop owners think the hard decision is which lift to buy. It isn’t. The hard decision is what order you pour concrete, run power, and frame walls in relation to that lift. We’ve walked into farm shops where a beautiful new alignment rack sat six inches too close to a support post, or where the 220V run was stubbed in the wrong wall entirely. Fixing that after the concrete cures costs more than the lift did.

Sequencing starts with the alignment lift’s footprint, runway spacing, and turntable clearance — not with the building’s existing framing. If a0436 or any related part is on your quote, ask your installer where that component lives in the final layout before a single yard of concrete goes down. We tell every northwest Iowa customer the same thing: draw the lift first, then draw the building around it, including at least three feet of clearance on the drive-through side for wheel alignment equipment to swing freely. Skipping this step is the single most common reason we get emergency service calls within the first year.

Concrete Requirements Come Before Anything Else

Alignment lifts carry significant point loads, and rural shops built on older ag-building slabs often don’t have adequate thickness or rebar for a two-post or in-ground unit. We recommend a minimum 4-inch slab with proper reinforcement for most two-post alignment lifts, and thicker for heavier four-post or in-ground alignment racks. If your shop building predates the lift purchase, get a core sample or at least a reliable slab-age estimate before ordering equipment.

This is also where a0436 and other anchor-related hardware come into play — anchor bolt embedment depth depends entirely on slab thickness and cure time, and cutting corners here is not something any reputable installer will do. We’ve turned away installs in northwest Iowa because the existing slab simply wasn’t safe to anchor into, and we’d rather tell you that before delivery than after. Budget for a new concrete pad as part of your total project cost, not as an afterthought if the old slab fails inspection.

Power and Compressed Air Before Drywall

Alignment bays need more electrical capacity than a typical repair stall — lift motors, alignment computer systems, and lighting for accurate readings all draw power simultaneously. Run your 220V circuits and compressed air lines before you close up walls, and size the air compressor for continuous alignment work, not just occasional tire changes. Rural shops on older single-phase service sometimes need a panel upgrade, and that’s a conversation to have with your electrician during the framing stage, not after the lift arrives on a truck.

We also recommend running a dedicated air line drop near where hardware like a0436 or similar fittings get serviced, since alignment techs are in and out of that area constantly during setup and calibration. Lighting matters too — alignment work depends on accurate visual readings, and shadowed bays lead to comebacks. Plan overhead lighting directly above the rack, not just general shop lighting, before the ceiling goes up.

Choosing the Right Lift for Northwest Iowa Alignment Work

Not every two-post lift is alignment-ready out of the box. You need open-front columns or a runway configuration that gives your alignment sensors a clear line of sight, plus a turning radius wide enough for the turntables. Ask your installer directly whether the lift model you’re considering is rated and configured for alignment, because plenty of general-purpose two-post lifts are not. Measure your tallest expected vehicle with any rack or toolbox add-ons before finalizing door rough-in dimensions. We’ve seen more than one shop pour a slab and frame walls only to discover their overhead door clearance was two inches short for the exact truck that generates half their alignment revenue.

Timing Your Purchase Around Construction Milestones

The biggest mistake we see is ordering the lift too early or too late relative to construction. Order too early and you’re storing an expensive piece of equipment in a half-finished building, risking damage or theft. Order too late and your electrician or concrete crew finishes work based on guesswork instead of actual lift specs, which is how you end up with the wrong anchor spacing or a power run in the wrong wall.

The right sequence is: finalize your lift model and get exact specs in writing, including footprint, anchor pattern, and power requirements, then schedule concrete and electrical work around those specs, then schedule delivery for right after the concrete cure period ends. This keeps your farm shop build-out on budget and avoids the rework we get called out for constantly across northwest Iowa.

What to Ask Your Installer Before You Sign

Before signing a quote, ask specifically about anchor bolt requirements, minimum slab thickness, power specs, and expected lead time on the lift and any related parts. Ask whether the quote includes delivery and installation or just the equipment — this catches a surprising number of rural buyers off guard. And ask what local parts support looks like once the lift is running, because alignment equipment needs calibration and occasional part replacement over its life.
