A builder converting part of a pole shed into a dedicated maintenance bay for his overlanding rigs called us wanting a lift that could handle oil changes and fluid service on trucks pushing 7,000 pounds with roof racks, bumpers, and skid plates already installed. The lift itself was the easy part of the conversation. The wiring in his shop was not, and it ended up shaping which lift we recommended and how the whole install came together.

Why This Iowa City Build Needed Above Ground Automotive Lifts, Not an In-Ground System

The customer’s pole shed had a 30×40 footprint with a poured concrete slab, which is a great starting point, but in-ground lifts were never really on the table. In-ground installation means cutting the slab, running hydraulic lines below grade, and dealing with a fixed location that can’t move if he ever reconfigures the shop. Above ground automotive lifts sit on top of the existing slab, anchor down with concrete anchors, and can be relocated or removed if the space changes purpose down the road. For a builder who was still figuring out his workflow with off-road vehicles that needed both service access and overnight storage, that flexibility mattered.

We also talked through weight capacity early, because overlanding trucks are heavier than the stock version of whatever they started as. Winches, steel bumpers, roof-top tents, and long-range fuel tanks add up fast. We steered him toward a 9,000 to 10,000 pound capacity 2-post lift rather than cutting it close on a 7,000 pound rated unit, because built-out trucks creep past their factory curb weight quickly and nobody wants to find that out the hard way with a truck in the air.

Mapping the Electrical Circuit Before the Lift Ever Ships

This is where the project actually got interesting. Most asymmetric 2-post lifts in this weight class run on a single motor, typically 220-volt single phase, drawing somewhere in the 15 to 20 amp range depending on the model. That sounds simple until you’re standing in a pole shed that was wired years ago for lights, an air compressor, and maybe a welder outlet, with nothing dedicated for a lift motor. We had our electrician partner walk the panel with the customer before we finalized the order.

The shed had a 200 amp service, which was plenty of headroom, but the existing sub-panel in the shop bay only had two open breaker slots. We specced a dedicated 220V 30 amp circuit run directly from the panel to the lift location, sized with margin above the motor’s rated draw so the lift wasn’t sharing a circuit with anything else that cycles on and off, like a compressor. Running a dedicated circuit also matters for troubleshooting later — if the lift ever trips a breaker, you know exactly what’s on that line instead of chasing down which outlet in the shop is fighting for amperage.

Single Phase vs Three Phase: What Actually Matters for a Home or Small Shop

Almost every above ground automotive lift sold for home garages, pole sheds, and small independent shops runs single phase power, because that’s what’s available at a typical residential or light commercial service. Three phase power exists in a lot of commercial and industrial buildings, and if you happen to have it, some heavier-duty lift models can be ordered in a three phase configuration that runs a bit smoother and pulls less amperage per leg. But unless your building was already wired for three phase for other equipment, it is not worth paying to have it installed just for a lift.

For this Iowa City build, single phase 220V was exactly what the shed had, so we didn’t complicate things. What we did double check was voltage drop over distance. The lift bay was about 60 feet of wire run from the panel, and long runs on undersized wire cause voltage drop that can make a lift motor struggle, run hot, or trip a breaker under load. Our electrician sized the wire gauge for that run length rather than just matching amperage on paper, which is a detail a lot of DIY installs miss.

Sizing the Bay for Two Vehicles: One Lifted, One Stored Underneath

The customer’s original ask was to store a car on the lift and potentially park another underneath it, which is one of the best use cases for above ground automotive lifts in a home or small shop setting. A 2-post asymmetric lift, when raised to full height, leaves clear space below the arms and columns for a second vehicle to park underneath, effectively doubling your parking density in the same floor footprint. But that only works if the ceiling height and column placement are planned correctly from the start.

With 12-foot sidewalls, we ran the numbers on total lift height including the vehicle’s height when raised, and confirmed there was enough clearance without the vehicle brushing the ceiling or roof trusses. We also mapped column spacing against the width of his largest truck’s mirrors and door swing, since overland builds often run wider than stock with aftermarket bumpers and tire carriers. Getting that spacing wrong means a lift that technically fits the shop but doesn’t actually let you open doors or walk around the vehicle comfortably.

Anchoring Into a Pole Building Slab

Pole buildings get a bad reputation for lift installs because people assume the slab isn’t rated for it, but that’s not usually the issue — the issue is slab thickness and cure time. We ask every customer for slab thickness and age before we ship equipment. A 4-inch slab poured to spec with proper rebar or mesh and cured at least 28 days is generally fine for above ground automotive lifts in this weight range, using the anchor bolts specified by the manufacturer.

In this case the shed had a 5-inch slab, which gave us more margin than we typically need. We still followed the manufacturer’s anchor torque specs to the letter and used an installer to verify with a hammer drill and torque wrench rather than guessing. Skipping this step is how you end up with a lift that walks slightly under load or anchors that back out over time. It’s a small piece of the install that has an outsized effect on long-term safety.

What This Case Study Means for Your Own Shop Wiring Plan

If you’re planning your own above ground automotive lifts purchase, the electrical conversation should happen before you order, not after the lift shows up on your dock. Pull your panel’s spec sheet, count your open breaker slots, and measure the distance from your panel to where the lift will sit. That information lets us tell you within a few minutes on the phone whether your existing service will work or whether you need an electrician to add a circuit first.

We’d rather have that conversation up front than have a customer sitting on a lift they can’t power because nobody checked amperage. It’s a five-minute call that saves weeks of delay, and it’s exactly the kind of planning question our team walks through with every Iowa customer before a single bolt goes into the slab.
