How to Tell a Cylinder Needs Rebuilding vs Replacing

The first sign of trouble on most above ground lift cylinders is drift — the lift slowly settles overnight instead of holding its position. Sometimes you’ll see actual fluid on the floor beneath the cylinder, and sometimes it’s just a slow, invisible internal bypass that only shows up as drift. Either way, the cause is almost always worn seals, and in most cases a seal kit rebuild solves it completely for a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder.

Where rebuilding stops making sense is when the cylinder bore itself is scored or pitted. Run a fingernail down the bore wall — if you catch on grooves or rust pitting, no seal kit will hold pressure against that surface for long. We’ve pulled cylinders out of family-owned garages that were original to a lift installed decades ago, and honestly, many of those bores are still smooth enough to rebuild, because seasonal storage use puts far fewer cycles on a cylinder than daily commercial service. A single-post storage lift cylinder, for example, commonly runs a 3.5-inch to 4-inch bore with a stroke matched to a 6-foot lifting height, and if that bore is clean, a rebuild kit is the right call every time.

Measuring Your Cylinder Correctly Before Ordering Parts

Ordering the wrong seal kit is the single most common mistake we see, and it almost always comes down to measuring incorrectly. Bore diameter is measured across the inside of the cylinder barrel, not the outside of the housing — a mistake that leads people to order a kit one full size too large. Rod diameter matters just as much, since the rod seal and wiper have to match that dimension precisely or you’ll get leakage past the rod within weeks of the rebuild.

Stroke length is the third critical number, and it determines how far the cylinder extends — directly tied to your lift’s rated lifting height. On a typical above ground lift used for vehicle storage, we commonly see stroke lengths matched to somewhere between 5 and 7 feet of total lift travel, though this varies by manufacturer and model. Write down bore, rod diameter, and stroke length together, plus the brand and model if it’s stamped anywhere on the cylinder body or base plate, before you call to order a kit — that combination is what lets us match the correct seal kit the first time instead of shipping you the wrong parts twice.

What’s Actually Inside a Seal Kit

A typical hydraulic cylinder seal kit for an above ground lift includes the piston seal, rod seal, wiper seal, O-rings for the gland and end caps, and often a backup ring depending on the cylinder design. Piston seals handle the pressure differential as fluid pushes the piston up; rod seals keep pressure from bypassing around the rod; wiper seals are the outermost piece and keep dirt and moisture from being dragged back into the cylinder on the down stroke.

For family-owned shops doing their own rebuild, the wiper seal is worth paying extra attention to, especially with seasonal storage use — a lift that sits loaded for months at a time with a compromised wiper will slowly draw in moisture, which leads to internal corrosion even if the lift isn’t cycling often. We recommend replacing every seal in the kit at once rather than piecing it together, since the labor of pulling the cylinder is the same whether you replace one seal or all of them, and a partial rebuild often means doing the job twice within a year.

Step-by-Step: Pulling and Rebuilding the Cylinder

Start by fully lowering the lift and relieving all hydraulic pressure before disconnecting any lines — this is non-negotiable for safety with a loaded storage lift. Disconnect the hydraulic line at the base of the cylinder and cap it to prevent contamination, then remove the retaining pins or bolts holding the cylinder to the lift structure. Most above ground lift cylinders come out as a single assembly once the mounting hardware is free.

Once removed, clamp the cylinder barrel in a padded vise, never the rod, and unscrew the gland nut to access the piston and rod assembly. Slide the rod out carefully to avoid scoring the bore with the piston edges, then clean every component with a lint-free rag and inspect the bore under good light. Install the new seals in the orientation shown on the kit’s diagram — this is the step people get wrong most often — lubricate everything with clean hydraulic fluid before reassembly, and torque the gland nut to the manufacturer’s spec rather than just snugging it by feel.

Bleeding Air and Testing After Reassembly

After reinstalling the cylinder, reconnect the hydraulic line and refill the power unit reservoir with the correct fluid type and viscosity for your lift brand. Cycle the lift slowly through several full up-and-down cycles with no load to bleed trapped air out of the system — air in the line will feel spongy and cause the lift to settle unevenly, which can look like a seal problem even when the rebuild was done correctly.

Check for leaks at every fitting and around the gland nut after the first few cycles, and let the lift sit fully loaded overnight before trusting it with a vehicle for storage. If it holds position without drift after 24 hours, the rebuild succeeded. If you still see slow settling after a proper bleed and overnight test, the issue may be a check valve or the power unit itself rather than the cylinder, and that’s worth a call before you assume the rebuild failed.

When Family Shops Should Call a Pro Instead

Rebuilding a cylinder yourself is absolutely doable for a mechanically capable shop, and plenty of the family-owned garages we work with across the Iowa-Illinois corridor do exactly that. But there are situations where calling us first saves time and money — if the cylinder brand is unmarked or discontinued, if the bore shows any pitting at all, or if this is the lift’s first major service in ten-plus years and you’re not sure what else might be worn.
