Why a Mobile Mechanic Needed an Above Ground Lift

The Garage He Was Starting With

We found the garage was fed by a subpanel with limited capacity that had been sized for basic lighting and a single 120V outlet circuit, nowhere near enough for an above ground lift plus welding equipment running simultaneously. This is a common story with detached garages that were never built with a shop in mind, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that needs to get sorted before equipment shows up, not discovered the hard way after.

Electrical Circuit and Phase Requirements, Explained Plainly

Most two-post above ground lifts in the capacity range this mechanic needed run on a dedicated 220V/230V single-phase circuit, typically requiring a 20 to 30 amp breaker depending on the specific hydraulic power unit. That’s a very different demand than a typical garage outlet circuit, and it needs its own breaker, not a shared circuit with other equipment. We specced out exactly what the lift’s power unit required and cross-referenced it against what his welding and cutting equipment would draw if used at the same time.

The fix was a panel upgrade and a new dedicated circuit run specifically for the lift, separate from the circuits feeding his welder and any future compressor. This kept the lift’s power draw isolated so a welding session wouldn’t cause voltage sag or nuisance tripping while the lift was mid-cycle. For anyone running similar equipment mixes — lift plus welder plus air compressor — we always recommend mapping out simultaneous draw before finalizing a panel, because retrofitting a circuit after the concrete work and lift install is far more disruptive than doing it up front.

Slab Work Ran Alongside the Electrical Upgrade

While the electrician handled the panel and circuit work, we evaluated the existing slab the same way we do for every above ground lift install. The garage floor was thinner than ideal and hadn’t been poured with anchor loads in mind, so we recommended a reinforced pour in the lift’s footprint before setting columns. Doing the electrical and concrete work in the same window kept the garage out of commission for one continuous stretch instead of two separate disruptions to his business.

This sequencing matters more for a mobile mechanic than it might for a shop with more flexible scheduling, since every day the garage is down is a day he can’t take on the fixed-location jobs that were the whole point of the upgrade. Planning electrical, concrete, and lift install as one coordinated project rather than three separate phone calls saved him real time.

Choosing the Right Above Ground Lift for Restoration Work

For frame and floor pan work, we recommended a two-post configuration with strong access to the vehicle’s underside and enough lifting height to work comfortably standing rather than stooped. We steered away from any configuration that would put fixed obstructions under the vehicle’s center section, since restoration techs need clear access across the entire floor pan and rocker areas, not just the areas near the wheels.

We also talked through arm reach and adjustability, since restoration and classic car work sometimes means working on vehicles with unusual wheelbases or aftermarket suspension geometry that doesn’t match modern factory lift points. Having flexible arm configurations on the above ground lift gave him confidence he could take on a wider range of project vehicles without hitting compatibility issues mid-job.
